OMAHA, Neb. -- Junior guard #Mitch Albers# scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, and the UNO men's basketball team held off a late rally from Lincoln (Mo.) to defeat the Blue Tigers 83-81 Saturday night at Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Mavericks improved to 5-4 overall, 2-3 in the MIAA. The Blue Tigers fell to 2-7, 0-5 in the MIAA.
Senior guard #Tyler Bullock# added 16 points, and redshirt freshman center #John Karhoff# scored a career-high 10 points and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds, as UNO heads into the semester break on a two-game winning streak.
Leading 32-28 at halftime, UNO opened the second half on a 12-2 run to take a 44-30 lead with 15:58 to play. Albers started the flurry with a fast-break dunk and then hit two jumpers during the run.
UNO extended the lead to as many as 18 points, 62-44, with 9:50 remaining. But Lincoln battled back with a 10-2 run to pull within 64-54 with 6:45 left. Lincoln's Pierre DeClue had six points during that stretch.
Leading 71-60 with 3:49 left, the Mavericks appeared to have the game in hand, but the Blue Tigers slowly chipped away the lead, pulling to within three, 78-75 with 23 seconds left, on two free throws by Daniel Armah.
Albers sank two free throws, but DeClue answered with a jumper to make it 80-77. Then #Caleb Steffensmeier# hit a pair of free throws, but DeClue banked in a 3-pointer from the wing to make it 82-80 with five seconds to play.
Albers made a free throw, then missed the second, and #Jeff Martin# purposely fouled Armah on the defensive rebound to put the Blue Tigers at the free throw line, down by three with two seconds to play.
Armah made one free throw and missed the second one intentionally to try and grab the offensive rebound, but the ball bounced away to the corner as time expired.
DeClue led all scorers with 22 points. Terrell Williams added 15 for the Blue Tigers.
Matt Starks was the fourth Mav in double-figures, adding 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.
The Mavericks have two weeks off before returning to action on Sunday, Jan. 2 at Missouri Western.
