The UNO women's basketball team returns from its two-week Christmas break with a conference road game at Missouri Western on Sunday, Jan. 2, at 1:30 p.m., in St. Joseph, Mo.
UNO enters with a 4-5 record and 1-4 mark in MIAA play. The Mavericks are coming off a 76-62 win over Lincoln (Mo.) on Dec. 18, in which three Mavs scored in double-figures, led by Jessica Zaruba's career-high 24 points.
The Griffons entered a Thursday non-conference game against Newman with a 5-3, 3-2 record. In its last MIAA game, Missouri Western upset then No. 4 Washburn, 60-41, on Dec. 18 at the MWSC Fieldhouse in St. Joseph.
UNO leads the all-time series 9-3 and has won the last four meetings since the Mavericks joined the MIAA in 2008-09. UNO won at Missouri Western, 58-55, last Feb. 10. However, this year's version of the Griffons are off to the best start in Head Coach Lynn Plett's four years at the helm.
Sunday's game can be heard on 90.7 FM KVNO, or it can be viewed online with a B2 membership. It marks the first of three in a span of seven days. On Wednesday, the Mavericks return home to host Truman at 5:30 p.m., and then on Saturday, UNO hits the road for a 1:30 p.m. contest at Central Missouri.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: MISSOURI WESTERN GRIFFONS
In its last MIAA game on Dec. 19, Missouri Western throttled then No. 4 and previously unbeaten Washburn, 60-41, at the MWSC Fieldhouse in St. Joseph, Mo. The Griffons were bolstered by the debut of junior guard Alicia Bell. Bell, a transfer from Northwest Missouri State who had missed the Griffons first seven games for academic reasons, came off the bench and scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds in 23 minutes of action.
Missouri Western never trailed as they hassled the Lady Blues into 28.8-percent shooting from the field, and just 3-of-22 (13.6 percent) from behind the arc.
Leading the way for the Griffons is junior forward Jessica Koch. The 2009 MIAA Freshman of the Year and 2010 All-MIAA Honorable Mention performer, Koch has started all 63 games in her career. This season, she leads the Griffons in scoring with 16.6 points per game, and she was named the MIAA Player of the Week on Dec. 6 after scoring a career-high 27 points in a 79-69 loss at Emporia State.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE MAVS: UNO 76, LINCOLN (MO.) 62
OMAHA, Neb. – Behind a career-high 24 points from Jessica Zaruba, the UNO women's basketball team ran away from Lincoln University in its first MIAA win, a 76-62 decision on Dec. 18 at Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Mavericks improved to 4-5 overall and 1-4 in MIAA play. The Blue Tigers dropped to 1-8 overall and 0-5 in league play.
Zaruba led three Mavs in double-figures, as Heather Pohl scored 18 and Paige Frauendorfer chipped in 16.
Zaruba's big game began right at the opening tip, as she grabbed a loose ball and raced to the hoop for a lay-up just two seconds into the game. She then grabbed a defensive rebound and found Frauendorfer on the wing for a 3-pointer and a 5-0 lead.
UNO led 38-22 at the half, and after the break UNO bolted to a 51-27 lead, capping a 31-9 run spanning both halves. The Mavs appeared to be in control, but the Blue Tigers didn't fold.
Bria Dillard scored six straight points for Lincoln, TeAira Epps hit a 3-pointer, and Essuon scored seven in a row, as Lincoln used a 16-0 run to creep back within 51-43 with 10:59 left. Pohl hit a 3-pointer to end the run, and UNO extended the lead back to 15 at 63-48 with 6:08 to play.
UNO forced 26 Lincoln turnovers and held a decisive advantage in points off turnovers, 30-10. Jamie Nash led the effort with five steals, while Zaruba added three of her own.
LAST TIME THEY MET: UNO 58, MISSOURI WESTERN 55
The Mavericks overcame a six-point halftime deficit and then fought off the Griffons down the stretch in a 58-55 win at Missouri Western on February 10, 2010.
Jessica Zaruba hit three second half 3-pointers and finished with 10 points. She just missed a double-double as she pulled in eight rebounds in the game.
Alyssa Green led the Mavs with 16 points with a 7-for-12 performance from the field, and Heather Pohl hit three 3-pointers and finished with 10 points.
Jessica Koch led the Griffons with 19 points, and she added eight rebounds.
Stealing the Spotlight
Sophomore guard Jamie Nash ranked 15th nationally in steals per game in her freshman campaign in 2009-10, averaging 3.0 steals per contest. Nash was the highest-ranked MIAA player within the final NCAA Division II statistics report released in March, and her performance for the year earned her a spot on the conference's all-defensive team. This season, Nash recorded a career-high 11 steals in a 69-38 win over Calumet College on Nov. 27. Nash earned the first double-double of her career, as she also scored 13 points in the victory. Nash's 11 steals was one short of the school-record 12 steals, set by Linda Schabloske on Jan. 30, 1993.
Fresh Faces
Head Coach Patty Patton Shearer has eight newcomers on her young roster for 2010-11, highlighted by transfers in sophomore guard Carly Cator (San Francisco State), junior forwards Jasamine Reeves (Lon Morris JC) and Lauren Andrews (Labette CC). Three freshmen are competing for playing time this season: guard Amanda Woodring (Millard West) and forwards Stacia Gebers (Superior) and Jordan Spencer (Millard West). Two freshmen, guards Natasha Mueller (Seward) and Aisle Quinlan (Des Moines Dowling Catholic), are redshirting.
Young Experience Defines Mavericks in 2010-11
UNO's returning squad may be primarily young this year, but the group gained considerable experience in the 2009-10 campaign. Sophomore guard Jamie Nash led the team in total assists and steals as a freshman, and junior guard Heather Pohl was one of two Mavericks to average in double-figure scoring with 10.2 points per game.

Mavs Chosen Eighth in MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll
Nebraska-Omaha was picked to finish eighth in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association's 2010-11 preseason polls, the league office announced in October. The preseason conference standings are chosen in a survey of MIAA head coaches and media members.
The Mavericks earned 43 points in the coaches poll and 66 in the media list. The 12 conference coaches selected Washburn as their preseason favorite, while media voters had the Lady Blues and defending national champion Emporia State tied for their top choice.
UNO Named to 2009-10 WBCA Academic Top 25
The 2009-10 UNO women's basketball team earned a spot on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, the WBCA announced in July. The list recognizes schools throughout the nation that carry the best overall team grade-point averages for the entire season.
The Mavs rounded out all NCAA Division II institutions at 25th, posting a team GPA of 3.403. It marked the first time since 2006-07 that UNO was included on the WBCA Academic Top 25.
