The UNO women's basketball team takes on defending Division II national champion Emporia State on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at W.L. White Auditorium in Emporia, Kan. The Lady Hornets are ranked No. 10 in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 poll. UNO is 1-3 against Emporia State since joining the MIAA in the 2008-09 season, and is 4-5 all-time against the Lady Hornets.
Junior forward Heather Pohl continues to lead the Mavs in scoring as she has most of the season. Pohl is averaging 15.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Sophomore point guard Jamie Nash leads the Mavs at point guard, scoring 12 points per game and nabbing 4.8 steals per game. Sophomore guard Paige Frauendorfer averages 9.5 points and a team-best 6.3 rebounds per game.
Wednesday's game will be the third straight conference road game for the Mavs. The combined record of the Mavs' first three conference opponents is 16-2 (6-0 MIAA). Last week, UNO fell at No. 4 Washburn, 69-64, and at Fort Hays State, 76-70. After Wednesday's matchup against Emporia State, UNO will return home for MIAA meetings against Northwest Missouri State (Dec. 11) and Lincoln (Dec. 18).
Scouting the Competition: Emporia State Lady Hornets
The defending national champion Lady Hornets are 5-1 (2-0 MIAA) this season. Emporia State went 30-5 (17-4 MIAA) in 2009-10, marching through its NCAA Division II Tournament bracket and ending with a win over No. 6 Fort Lewis in the NCAA Division II Championship Game. The Lady Hornets return five players this year who played in that national championship game.
The Lady Hornets play especially tough on their home court. They are 185-15 in their last 200 contests played at White Auditorium. This year, Emporia State is 3-0 at home, including its two conference wins over Northwest Missouri State (77-67) and Missouri Western (79-69) last week to open MIAA play. Emporia State also defeated Tulsa in its season opener, 68-64, and handled Concordia-St. Paul and Panhandle State at home. The Lady Hornets' lone loss of the season came at UC-Colorado Springs, 70-67, on Nov. 27.
Senior forward Alli Volkens leads the Lady Hornets in scoring and rebounding, averaging a double-double –13.5 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. Volkens was the MIAA Co-Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 22-28, when she averaged 13.5 points and 15.5 rebounds. She had a career-high 19 rebounds against UC-Colorado Springs.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE MAVS: Fort Hays State 76, UNO 70
HAYS, Kan. - The UNO women's basketball team ran into strong bench play from Fort Hays State and dropped its second MIAA Conference game of the season on Friday, Dec. 3, falling 76-70 to the Lady Tigers.
Fort Hays State, capitalizing off a 41-15 advantage in bench points, improved to 5-1 (2-0 MIAA). The Mavericks fell to 3-3 (0-2 MIAA), while suffering their second conference loss in Kansas during the week.
Heather Pohl led UNO with 21 points and seven rebounds, and the Mavs were a perfect 11-of-11 on free throws, but they were unable to find an answer on the defensive end for Fort Hays State's Kimber Weiser.
Weiser came off the bench to score 21 points, including 12-of-14 on free throws. Rhys Pihl also came off the bench to chip in 10 points in just 12 minutes of play. Shelby Hillman added eight off the bench.
Fort Hays State led throughout the first 10:12 of the contest, but UNO went on a 15-2 run to turn a 14-8 deficit into a 23-16 lead with 6:22 left in the first half. The Mavs led by two, 34-32, at halftime.
In the second half, Weiser hit two free throws with 14:13 to play to give the Lady Tigers a 43-42 lead, a lead they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the game. Fort Hays State led by as many as 10 points, and the closest UNO could get down the stretch was down by four on a three-pointer by Jamie Nash with three seconds left.
Jessica Zaruba scored 12 points, and Nash added 10 for UNO.
LAST TIME THEY MET: Emporia State 96, UNO 78
EMPORIA, Kan. - The Mavericks shot 47 percent and led early, but a slow end to the first half led to a 96-78 loss at Emporia State on Feb. 6, 2010.
Heather Pohl, who led the Mavs with 18 points, made her first four field goals to help UNO build an 18-12 lead. Each team traded field goals after that and then the Lady Hornets went on a 6-0 run to tie the score at 20-20. Ashley Nelson's layup at 8:52 put the Mavs up by a point, but ESU scored 30 points in those final minutes of the half to go up 55-38 at halftime. The Mavs scored just 12 in those minutes.
The Hornets scored the first six points in the second half to go up by 22. The Mavericks chipped it to 11 at the 10-minute mark with five straight points and then they got as close as 10 inside the five-minute mark.
Pohl finished another big night 5-of-7 from 3-point range. The Mavericks shot 47 percent from the field, their highest output since their opener against Dana and they were 83 percent (20-of-24) from the free throw line.
The Lady Hornets shot 49 percent from the field and 80 percent from the line. Cassondra Boston led five players in double figures with 24 points.
Stealing the Spotlight
Sophomore guard Jamie Nash ranked 15th nationally in steals per game in her freshman campaign in 2009-10, averaging 3.0 steals per contest. Nash was the highest-ranked MIAA player within the final NCAA Division II statistics report released in March, and her performance for the year earned her a spot on the conference's all-defensive team. This season, Nash recorded a career-high 11 steals in a 69-38 win over Calumet College on Nov. 27. Nash earned the first double-double of her career, as she also scored 13 points in the victory. Nash's 11 steals was one short of the school-record 12 steals, set by Linda Schabloske on Jan. 30, 1993.

Head Coach Patty Patton Shearer has eight newcomers on her young roster for 2010-11, highlighted by transfers in sophomore guard Carly Cator (San Francisco State), junior forwards Jasamine Reeves (Lon Morris JC) and Lauren Andrews (Labette CC). Three freshmen are competing for playing time this season: guard Amanda Woodring (Millard West) and forwards Stacia Gebers (Superior) and Jordan Spencer (Millard West). Two freshmen, guards Natasha Mueller (Seward) and Aisle Quinlan (Des Moines Dowling Catholic), are redshirting.
Mavs Chosen Eighth in MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll
Nebraska-Omaha was picked to finish eighth in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association's 2010-11 preseason polls, the league office announced in October. The preseason conference standings are chosen in a survey of MIAA head coaches and media members.
The Mavericks earned 43 points in the coaches poll and 66 in the media list. The 12 conference coaches selected Washburn as their preseason favorite, while media voters had the Lady Blues and defending national champion Emporia State tied for their top choice.
UNO Named to 2009-10 WBCA Academic Top 25
The 2009-10 UNO women's basketball team earned a spot on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, the WBCA announced in July. The list recognizes schools throughout the nation that carry the best overall team grade-point averages for the entire season.
The Mavs rounded out all NCAA Division II institutions at 25th, posting a team GPA of 3.403. It marked the first time since 2006-07 that UNO was included on the WBCA Academic Top 25.
