Mavs Open MIAA Action with Doubleheader Split Agai

CHANUTE, Kan. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha opened up Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play this afternoon with a split in its doubleheader against Pittsburg State. The Mavericks took the first game 10-0, but fell in the second 4-3. The games were played in Chanute, Kan., at Hudson Field on the campus of Neosho County Community College due to wet field conditions at Pitt State's Al Ortolani Field. UNO is now 3-1 overall with 1-1 MIAA mark, while the Gorillas move to 2-1 overall with a 1-1 conference record.
UNO's bats erupted for 14 hits in the first game. The Mavs got out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. #Andrew Hansen opened the game with a leadoff double and scored on a Jed Hanson single. Hanson scored on a Tyler Splichal# single and the Mavs' offensive spark was ignited. UNO put three more runs across the plate in the second inning, two in the fourth and two in the fifth to stretch the lead to 9-0. #Tyler Lundy# scored in the sixth to extend the lead to 10-0 and the Mavs never looked back from there.
Sophmore right-hander #Joe Holtmeyer# (1-0) pitched a solid game in his second outing of the season. He tossed six scoreless innings, giving up two hits, walking two and tying his career high with 11 strike outs in the win.
Hansen finished the first game 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Splichal went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a double. #Jeremy Klein# was 3-for-3 with an RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base.
In the second game, UNO let a 3-2 lead slip away as the Gorillas tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and went on to win it in the bottom of the ninth. PSU's Chase Barnes delivered a pinch-hit double to lead the bottom of the ninth off and scored the winning run.
Splichal and #Ryan Hook# both smacked doubles in the second inning and scored to give the Mavs a 2-0 lead. PSU responded with two runs of its own to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. UNO regained the lead in the third. Hanson belted a leadoff double in the third and scored off a Lundy sacrifice fly to put the Mavs back on top.
#Zach Croonquist# (0-1) took the loss. He pitched 1.3 innings.
The Mavs and Gorillas will play another doubleheader tomorrow with the first game slated for a 12 p.m. start at Hudson Field.
