JOPLIN, Mo.—#Nkeiruka Domike# set yet another school record in the triple jump to lead the UNO indoor track and field team on the second day of competition at the MIAA indoor track and field championship at Missouri Southern.
Domike won the event with a leap of 42 feet, one and a half inch, bettering her previous school record by more than three inches. In addition to the school record, it is also the top jump in the nation. She earned ten of UNO's 20 team points in the meet.
Battling the conference through the preliminary events, UNO will now send 14 athletes to tomorrow's finals. Complimenting her second place pentathlon finish yesterday, senior #Shannon Moore# kept pace on day two. Qualifying for Sunday's finals, Moore earned tops spots in three preliminary events.
In both the 200 and 400 meter, UNO dominated the field's top three spots as Moore took first place in the 400 meter with a time of 57.90, followed by #Anja Puc and Kayla Koepke#'s times of 57.99 and 58.28 respectively.
In the 200 meter, sophomore #Maja Mihalinec# led all runners with a time of 25.29, edging out Moore at 25.33 and Koepke at 25.37.
In the 60 meter hurdles, UNO had two of the event's six finalists. Moore finished second with a time of 8.83, followed by #Jody-Ann Coore#'s sixth place time of 8.96.
“These girls showed up to take care of business today,” said head coach Steve Smith. “We knew it wasn't going to be easy to get our people into the finals, and I am really proud of the way we went out there and never gave up.”
Adding to the team's 400 meter finish on Saturday, Puc took first in the 800 meter with a time of 2:18.91. Puc currently holds Division-II's top national time of 2:07.99 in the event and is UNO's current school record holder.
Mihalinec added a second place finish in the 60 meter dash, running a time of 7.65, while senior sprinter #Molly Belling# finished sixth at 7.81 to earn the final qualifying spot.
Posting qualifying times in the 600 yard run, senior Lisa Tesarak and junior #Jolene Smith# held their ground against the conference's highly ranked middle distance runners. Smith, finishing fourth at 1:28.33, and Tesarek, coming in fifth at 1:28.62, will have the opportunity to challenge the pace of both meet leaders Central Missouri and Missouri Southern on Sunday.
“The way we competed today, we have set ourselves up with a chance to snatch victory tomorrow,” Smith said. “It's going to be tough, but these girls showed today that they belong.”
Final events will begin tomorrow at 12 pm, leading off with Domike in the long jump.
