LINCOLN, Neb. - The ninth-ranked UNO track and field team got standout performances at a pair of meets this weekend including another nation-leading mark in a field event. Newcomer #Nkeiruka Domike# made her indoor debut in the triple jump with a leap that was both best in the nation and a school record.
Domike, a two-time Nigerian national champion in the event outdoors, jumped 41 feet, six inches at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational at Lincoln. That mark is a foot longer than the previous best jump in Division II this season and broke the old school record of 40 feet, 7 ¾ inches set in 2005. It was her first try at the event indoors.
“In her first meet for UNO, Kiru turned a practice session into the leading Division II mark and blew away our school record in the process,” head coach Steve Smith said. “She is the kind of seasoned international athlete who is a perfect complement to the local athletes who allow us to be a successful Division II program.”
Domike's distance was good for third place behind two Division I athletes.
UNO's #Shannon Moore# extended her lead in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association by posting a time of 8.75 in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles. It's a personal best and the third-fastest time in school history
Running the 800 meter run for the first time this season, junior sprinter #Anja Puc# narrowly missed breaking her own school record with a time of 2:09.79, edging out Kansas State's Sara Stoakes for fourth-place. Puc's time is the new top time indoors in Division II this season.
The Mavericks also sent a group of athletes to the John Dalton Invite in Vermillion, South Dakota.
Freshman #Kayla Murphy# earned a first place finish in the 60 meter hurdles with a personal best time of 9.19.
Senior sprinter #Molly Belling# added a pair of third-place finishes in both the 60-meter dash and 200-meter run events with times of 7.93 and 26.15 respectively.
The Mavericks will again see double action on Feb. 12 and 13, as the team will send athletes to both the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., and the Wildcat Open in Wayne, Neb.
