The Mavericks will return to MIAA action with a pair of doubleheaders on the road this weekend. Friday Nebraska-Omaha plays at Missouri Western at 3 p.m. and Saturday the Mavs play at Truman at 1 p.m.
UNO has won 16 straight and sits at 36-9 overall. The 25th-ranked Mavs are second in the MIAA at 9-2 and ranked fifth in the NCAA South Central Region ranking. MWSU is 24-21 and fourth in the league at 7-5 and Truman is 18-23 and sixth in the league at 6-6.
The Mavericks have won 16 straight games and are leading the MIAA with a .349 team batting average and 1.94 team ERA. UNO is fairing even better in MIAA contests, hitting .362 with a 1.38 ERA.
Mavs Jump to 6th in Region Ranking, Enter National Poll
The Mavericks climbed from sixth to fifth in the NCAA South Central Region poll released this Wednesday. Also, for the first time since the preseason, the Mavericks earned a spot in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association national poll. Nebraska-Omaha rounded out the ranking with a No. 25 spot in the poll released Wednesday.
The Mavs have won 16 straight games to help them get back into the national ranking, including one over then-No. 4 Emporia State and a sweep against then-No. 23 Augustana. The streak helped UNO reenter the ranking after being left out of the last seven. The Mavericks entered the preseason ranked 12th but slipped out after starting the year 3-4.
The Hornets are the top MIAA team in the current national ranking, slipping to eighth. They're second in the region. Non-conference opponents Augustana moved to 12th nationally and Wayne State (Neb.), the team UNO swept Tuesday, entered the poll at No. 24.
Slocum and Haley Give Mavs Two No-Hitters
The Maverick pitching staff has produced two no-hitters this year, both of them in MIAA games. Lindsey Slocum had a perfect game on March 28 against Missouri Southern and Beth Haley threw a no-no this Tuesday against Northwest Missouri.
Slocum's gem helped head coach Jeanne Scarpello set the UNO coaching win record with her 460th win. That same day during game one, Slocum hit a grand slam.
Slocum faced the minimum 15 batters in game two and struck out 10 of them. No Lion put a ball in play in fair territory until the fifth inning when the lead off hitter flew out to center field. The next batter tried bunting to get on, but Slocum fielded the ball and threw her out at first. She then got the next batter to pop up to Treightin Yates at second base to give her the gem.
She struck out the side in both the first and fourth innings. MSSU had a player foul out in both the second and third inning. The fifth inning was the only one Slocum didn't record a strikeout.
Haley took a perfect game into the seventh inning on Tuesday and then walked and hit a batter before closing out a no-hitter.
Haley didn't allow a batted ball to leave the infield. She struck out four and 13 of the 21 outs were ground outs. She also caught three batted balls, including two liners back to her. With a full count and two outs in the seventh, Haley walked Erin Leslie, giving up a chance at perfection. She then hit the next batter before getting the final Bearcat batter to foul out to first baseman Kristin Wellwood.
Hukill and Haley Give Mavs Five MIAA Weekly Honors
The Mavs have earned five MIAA athlete of the week honors this year. Beth Haley earned pitcher of the week this week and Alli Hukill earned hitter of the week. Slocum swept the honors on March 29 and the week before, Haley earned pitcher of the week.
Hukill's six home runs and Haley's no-hitter helped the Mavericks sweep the honors this week for the second time this year. Hukill hit six home runs during the MIAA Northern Crossover to earn all-tournament MVP honors. For the week, she batted .500 (11-for-22) with 17 RBIs and a 1.409 slugging percentage. The junior hit safely in every game last week and had at least one home run in every game of the crossover. She had two against No. 4 Emporia State.
Haley threw a no-hitter last Tuesday against Northwest Missouri and ended the week 3-0 with a 0.40 ERA. The junior went the complete seven innings in game one against the Bearcats, striking out four. Then, she recorded the final out in the second game to get a save. In the MIAA Northern Crossover, Haley pitched two complete-game wins. Saturday against SBU, she allowed two hits in a shutout, and Sunday she allowed four hits and a run to UCM. For the week, Haley struck out 14, allowed just six hits and walked one in 17 1/3 innings pitched.
Slocum earned both the MIAA pitcher and hitter of the week on March 29 after throwing a perfect game and driving in four times as many runs at the plate as she allowed score while pitching.
Slocum threw a perfect game March 28 and went 2-0 during the week with a 0.95 ERA. On top of throwing a perfect game, Slocum produced huge numbers at the plate. She hit two home runs, including a grand slam against MSSU, and she hit .533 on the week. Slocum went 2-for-3 with a homer in game one at Wayne State, and she went 3-for-4 in game two against PSU. Slocum had eight that week while allowing batters just nine in three appearances. She scored five runs and drove in eight while allowing just two runs to score against her.
Haley went 2-0 with a save in three appearances and had a perfect 0.00 ERA the week she earned her first honor. March 18 against Missouri Western, she pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits and no walks. She made two relief appearances March 19, getting a three-inning win against Washburn and a save in 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief against FHSU.
Scarpello Reigns as UNO's Wins Leader
Maverick head coach Jeanne Scarpello entered the year as UNO's leader in winning percentage and on March 28 she became the school's leader in total wins. She's currently 478-148-1 with a .763 winning percentage.
Scarpello, in her 11th year at UNO, surpassed Mary Yori, her predecessor on the win chart. Yori won 459 wins from 1989-99.
Mavericks Lead League in Batting and Pitching
The Mavericks lead the MIAA with a .349 batting average and they were seventh in the nation as of the April 18 NCAA statistic report. Treightin Yates leads the team with a .451 average and she's second in the MIAA in average and first with 65 total hits. Lindsey Slocum is second in the MIAA with 47 total RBI and 11th batting .369 overall.
The Mavericks also lead the conference with a 1.94 ERA, the only one below 2.00 among the 11 teams. All three of UNO's pitchers are in the top six in the league. Beth Haley is second with a 1.83 ERA, Slocum is fourth with a 1.90 mark and Melissa Negrete's 2.15 mark is sixth.
Yates Leading Team at the Plate
Senior second baseman Treightin Yates started the year on a 12-game hitting streak, building her average to .463 at the time. Since then, she has hit safely in all but 10 games and her average has only slipped to .451, best on the team and second in the MIAA.
Yates has 21 multi-hit games and 12 mulit-RBI games. She's batting .576 in 11 MIAA games.
Haley Nearly Perfect in Last Six Appearances
Junior pitcher Beth Haley allowed just two runs in her last six appearances, going 5-0 during the stretch with a save. She has a 0.53 ERA in those 26 1/3 innings. Haley has allowed 11 hits with 20 strikeouts and two walks during the stretch.
Overall, Haley has won eight straight decisions. She hasn't lost a game since pitching a loss to then-No. 18 Emporia State on April 3.
Slocum's Bat Kept in Lineup at All Times
Lindsey Slocum, one of the top pitchers and hitters in the MIAA, has a place in the batting order no matter the situation. She is second on the team batting .369 overall. When she gets the start as a pitcher, she is batting .350 and when she doesn't start, she plays in the outfield and in those situations, she's batting .375. Six of her home runs and 35 of her RBI came while an outfielder and one homer and 10 RBI came as a pitcher.
On a doubleheader on March 28 against Missouri Southern, Slocum hit a grand slam as an outfielder in game one and then tossed a perfect game in the second game.
Team on Pace to Enter Record Book
The Mavericks are four home runs away from setting a school record. UNO currently has 50 homers this year while the 2003 team set the record with 54 blasts. Alli Hukill had six in one weekend this year and with 10 right now, she's tied for sixth in UNO single-season history. 21 is the individual record and five more would put her in second.
UNO's .349 team batting average is on pace to be the second best in school history. The 1994 team hit .358 to set the record (1,000 at-bat minimum). The Mavericks are currently tied for fifth with 281 RBI and need 18 more to move to second. 366 is the record set in 1994.
The pitching staff is also on pace to enter the record book. The Mavs are averaging 5.88 strikeouts per game, currently the fourth best average. The 246 strikeouts is eighth and UNO needs 87 to enter the top five.

A busy week awaits the Mavs as they wrap up the regular season next week. UNO will play seven games in six days with three doubleheaders and a makeup game. Tuesday they travel to Augustana for a twin bill. They then play their final five MIAA games in three days next weekend. Friday they host Southwest Baptist and Saturday they host Central Missouri in what will be Senior Day. Sunday they head to Topeka, Kan., for a makeup game against Washburn.
