KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For the third time this season, Nebraska-Omaha sophomore #Joe Holtmeyer# has been named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Pitcher of the Week.
The right-hander broke UNO's 49-year old school record for strikeouts in a season set by Barry Miller in 1961, recording his 113th strikeout of the season. He topped it off by throwing UNO's first complete-game no-hitter since 1995 in an 8-1 win over Northwest Missouri State on April 24. Derek Mueller tossed UNO's last complete-game no-hitter in a 10-0 win over Midland Lutheran College on April 5, 1995.
Holtmeyer (8-1) went all seven innings, giving up the one run on a sacrifice fly by Bearcat designated hitter Landinn Echardt in the sixth inning. He finished with 12 strikeouts while walking four and hitting two batters to earn his career-high eighth win of the season. Holtmeyer earned his record-breaking 113th strikeout against the first batter of the game he faced, sitting down Nick Pfeiffer swinging. He had at least one strikeout in every inning to bring his 2010 total to 124 while stretching his career mark to 201, which ranks fifth on UNO's all-time career list.
Holtmeyer leads the team with 68 2/3 innings pitched and is second with a 1.57 ERA. He leads all of NCAA Baseball – Division I, II or III, with his 124 strikeouts and is tops with 16.24 strikeouts per nine innings (minimum 40 IP).
The Omaha, Neb., product was named the conference's Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career on March 30 and earned the honor again the following week on April 5.
