Mavs Complete Sweep of Bearcats With 9-3 Win

BOYS TOWN, Neb. - Freshman right-hander #Matt Tew# turned in his best performance of the season and the Maverick offense scattered 15 hits as the No. 26 UNO baseball team completed its four-game sweep of MIAA rival Southwest Baptist, downing the Bearcats 9-3 Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks got going early in the second inning when #Andrew Hansen led off with his 13th double of the season. Short stop Jeremy Klein# drove Hansen in on a single. Klein stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. With Klein in scoring position, #Brady Hohl# did his part with a sac fly to left field which scored Klein to put UNO up, 2-0.
The Bearcats responded with one run in the third when Justin Barnhart drew a bases-loaded walk allowing Zach Simonds to trot in from third for the run.
UNO came back with three more runs in the bottom half of the third to take a 5-1 lead. Center fielder #Tyler Lundy continued his hot hitting with a single to start the inning. Tyler Splichal# followed with his team-leading 16th double of the season which brought in Lundy. Hansen added a single in his next at-bat, scoring Splichal. Designated hitter Tim Urbarn singled to score Hansen.
The Mavericks posted another three-run inning in the sixth with the help of a SBU fielding error in the inning that allowed Lundy and Splichal to score and give UNO its largest lead of the game. SBU would plate two in the eighth and could not score any runs in the top of the ninth despite loading the bases.
Tew moved to 3-2 on the year in his fifth start. The Bellevue, Neb., native struck out a career-high six batters in the game while walking just two Bearcat batters. It was Tew's longest outing of the season, lasting seven innings and allowing one run on three hits.
#Mike Kubo# pitched two innings out of the bullpen, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out three and walking two.
Hansen was 4-for-5 on the day with a RBI and two runs scored. Lundy capped off a stellar series at the plate with two more hits. He went 9-for-17 in the series. Splichal recorded his fourth consecutive three-hit game with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. He was 12-for-17 with six doubles in the series.
UNO will be back on field on Wednesday, April 7 for a doubleheader against Missouri Western State University. The first game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start in St. Joseph, Mo.
