KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For the second straight week, right-hander #Joe Holtmeyer# has been named the MIAA's Pitcher of the Week for his one-hit complete game shutout against Southwest Baptist in UNO's 5-0 victory on April 2.
Holtmeyer (5-1) was brilliant on the mound for Nebraska-Omaha in his eighth appearance of the year. The sophomore from Omaha, Neb., tossed his second one-hit complete game shutout of the season to earn his fifth win of the year. He went all seven innings and allowed just the one hit while fanning 15 and walking three Bearcat batters. Holtmeyer struck out the side in the third, fourth and seventh innings. Niko Saladis had the only SBU hit of the game, which came in the second inning.
The sophomore leads the team with 89 Ks on the year and lowered his ERA to 1.70. He has four complete games this season, two of which are one-hitters. He has tallied 44 Ks in his last three appearances. Friday's win against SBU was the fifth game of the year Holtmeyer has recorded double-digit strikeouts. It was his fourth game with 13 or more in a game this year.
Holtmeyer currently ranks seventh on UNO's single-season all-time list with 89 strikeouts, two behind Mike Metz (1977). Barry Miller owns the all-time mark of 112 strikeouts in a season, which he reached in 1961.
