OMAHA, Neb. - #Julia Krejci# hit a walk-off single to win game two, 3-2 in nine innings Saturday against Central Missouri and set a school record with Nebraska-Omaha's 24th straight victory. The Mavericks took the opener, 6-1.
The Mavericks (44-9, 17-2 MIAA) can now clinch at least a share of the MIAA championship with a win tomorrow at Washburn. UNO and the Lady Blues will make up a single game at 1 p.m.
With the score tied 1-1 in game two, the Mavericks got the lead-off hitters on base in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings but they failed to push across a run.
UNO's first two batters in the ninth got out and then #Treightin Yates and Molly Feichtinger# drew walks. Krejci then lined a base hit into right-center field to score Yates and give the Mavs the win, breaking the old record of 23 straight wins, set in 1993.
Making her final regular season start at home on Senior Day, #Melissa Negrete# committed an error and gave up a run in the first inning, putting UNO behind for the first time since April 20 against Wayne State. She settled down after that and was in position to get a win, just needing help from her offense.
The Mavs took the lead in the second when #Lindsey Slocum scored on a wild pitch and Katelyn Hinton drove in Kristi Meneely# on a single.
The Jennies tied it in the sixth and then threatened to take the lead in the eighth. Their leadoff batter reached on an error and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. With one out, Negrete was then replaced by Slocum and she retired the next two in order.
The scored stayed tied until Krejci's game-winning hit. Slocum went the final 1 2/3 innings and allowed one hit with two strikeouts to improve to 17-2. Negrete allowed five hits and two runs, one earned. She struck out three and walked one. She's currently fifth in UNO history with 358 strikeouts.
Game one remained scoreless until UNO erupted with six runs in the fourth inning. Katelyn Hinton cleared the bases with a three-run double to start the scoring.Yates then drove her in with a single and Krejci sent Yates home with an RBI groundout.
That was all the offense the Mavs put together. #Beth Haley# kept the Jennies from getting anything going. She allowed just four hits, including a solo home run in the seventh. She struck out seven and walked one to improve to 19-2.
Along with Negrete, Maverick seniors Meneely, Yates, Krejci, #Jenna Dell and Kristin Wellwood# were honored between games during Senior Day ceremony.
