OMAHA, Neb. – A new league and new rivals will highlight the 14th season of hockey for the University of Nebraska at Omaha. UNO released its 2010-11 schedule today, its first as a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
“When we decided to move to the WCHA last summer, our goal was to place ourselves in the company of some of the best teams in the country and to compete with them,” said #Trev Alberts#, UNO's Director of Athletics. “Our new schedule will provide a firm test for our team and exciting hockey for our fans.
“Our schedule is very fan friendly as a majority of our home games will occur during the second half of the year, after the busy holiday season.”
The Mavericks will open the season with the annual Mutual of Omaha Stampede. UNO will face Clarkson University in the opener and 2010 Frozen Four participant RIT in the second game. The Stampede will be staged as a “classic” with opponents predetermined before the opening face-off. St. Cloud State of the WCHA will be the fourth participant.
St. Cloud is one of three teams whom the Mavericks will face four times during the 2010-11 season. In addition, the Mavericks also will play two home and two road games against North Dakota and Bemidji State. The Mavs will play North Dakota for the first time ever when they host a two-game series on Nov. 19 and 20. UNO head coach Dean Blais led North Dakota for ten seasons as its head coach, winning two national championships.
UNO plays its first ever WCHA games when it visits the University of Minnesota on Oct. 15 and 16. The Mavericks' first home WCHA games will be on Nov. 5 and 6 when they welcome Minnesota State. The two schools have a long history of non-conference action in hockey and an even longer history as former foes in the old North Central Conference in their Division II sports. Other WCHA teams making an appearance at Qwest Center Omaha this season include Michigan Tech, Wisconsin and Denver.
The Mavericks will retain one rivalry from their CCHA days in the new season when they visit the University of Michigan for a two-game series at Yost Ice Arena on Oct. 22 and 23. The Mavs also will play in a non-conference road series at Quinnipiac University of the ECAC on Dec. 30 and 31 at Hamden, Conn. They'll host a home series with the University of Alabama Huntsville on Jan. 28 and 29 to round out non-conference action.
Beginning Thursday, UNO will be selling a variety of 10-game plans for the upcoming season. Fans may choose a Friday or Saturday Night 10-Pack that includes nine Friday or nine Saturday games plus the Mavs' game against Michigan Tech on Thursday, Dec. 9th for $175. They also may purchase a Pick 10 Pack which allows them to pick any ten regular season games for $185. Fans may call (402) 554-2001 for more information or to order their seats.
