The Mavericks will take on West Texas A&M Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the first round of the South Central Region tournament as fourth-seeded UNO (49-11) makes its 21st straight trip to the NCAA tournament. The fifth-seeded Lady Buffs (43-16) will be making their first trip in their five years as a program.
Top-seeded Midwestern State will host UNO's half of the bracket in Wichita Falls, Texas, and the Mustangs will take on No. 8 St. Mary's in their first round game at noon. The winners will play Saturday at 11 a.m. in the semifinal and the winner will advance to Sunday's 1 p.m. final. The first round losers will play Saturday at 1:30 p.m. with the winner taking on the semifinal loser at 4 p.m. for a chance to advance to Sunday's final. The championship series will begin Sunday at 1 p.m.
The other half of the South Central Region bracket will be hosted by Emporia State. Texas Women's, Angelo State and Central Oklahoma will join the Hornets in that bracket.
The winners of the two brackets will meet in a super regional, played May 21 and 22. The eight super regional winners will meet in the NCAA national tournament from May 27-31 in St. Joseph, Mo.
Mavs Finish 2nd in MIAA Postseason Tournament
The Mavericks finished second in the MIAA tournament last weekend in Overland Park, Kan., falling in the final to Emporia State, the team UNO shared the regular season championship with.
UNO swept through the first two rounds of the MIAA tournament last Thursday, topping Truman and Missouri Western to extend their school-record winning streak to 27 games. They then faced Emporia State in the semifinal Friday. The Hornets, the last team to beat UNO, hit two home runs in the seventh inning to come back and win, 4-2.
That dropped UNO into the loser's bracket and the Mavs knocked off Fort Hays State, 8-3 to jump into the tournament final with ESU, needing to beat the Hornets twice. Emma Wright hit a solo homer in the second inning to help UNO jump to a 6-2 win but the Hornets hit two homers during a six-run second inning in game two to win, 10-1.
Molly Feichtinger batted .500 (9 for 18) in the tournament and Lindsey Slocum had eight RBI with two homers. In the circle she went 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 21 innings.
School-Record Winning Streak Comes To An End
The Mavericks suffered their first loss in over month last Friday to Emporia State, ending a school-record 27-game winning streak. The Hornets were also the last team to beat the Mavs before the streak started, sweeping them on April 3 in an MIAA series. The previous winning streak record was 27 straight games in 1993. Beth Haley had a 0.72 ERA during the stretch and opponents batted .175 against her. Overall, the Mav pitching staff had a 1.08 ERA during the streak.
The Mavericks were behind eight times during the streak. Their highest deficit was when Pittsburg State went up, 3-0 in the first inning on April 17 before the Mavs tied it in the second. Then-No. 23 Augustana struck first both games of a doubleheader on April 11 and the Mavs came back both times.
Mavs Clinch 11th Conference Title in School History
With an 18-2 record in league play, the Mavs clinched their first MIAA championship in their second year in the conference, sharing the title with Emporia State. The Mavs joined the league last year after winning 10 North Central Conference titles, the last in 2008. Head coach Jeanne Scarpello has been around for four of those NCC titles.
UNO's NCAA Tournament History:
This will be UNO's 21st straight trip to the NCAA tournament and the 23rd in school history. The Mavs went twice in 1982 and 1985 and then started their 20-year streak in 1990. The Mavs are 46-43 all-time in the tournament and 34-32 in regional tournaments. They are 13-9 all-time in first round games.
The Mavs advanced out of the regional and into the national tournament six times, winning a national championship in 2001. The Mavericks fought off elimination three times in 2001 en route to the title. They last made the eight-team national field in 2007, getting swept in two games.
Last Year in the NCAA Tourney:
After losing two straight to Emporia State in the 2009 MIAA postseason tournament, the Hornets beat the Mavs a third straight time in the first round of the NCAA South Central Region tournament.
The Mavericks, playing in their 20th straight NCAA tournament, got their revenge in the elimination final by beating ESU, 5-3. The game included a big second inning as the Mavs put up four runs thanks to two homers, one hit by Julia Krejci off of the scoreboard in center field. The Mavs got to that game by beating St. Edward's, 4-2 in an elimination game.
In the region final, two unanswered runs by Angelo State late in the game ended the Mavs' season. The Mavericks got down early but rallied back with a three-run fourth inning to tie the game at 4-4 before falling to the Belles. The Mavs won the first ever meeting between the two schools to begin the season, but it was Angelo State that ended the season for UNO.
Mavs All-Time Against The Tournament Field
With UNO's recent change in conferences and regions, they are facing three teams they have very limited experience against. The Mavs have never faced any of the three teams in their half of the bracket in NCAA postseason play and they have never faced West Texas A&M in the Lady Buffs five-year history. They have also never faced St. Mary's and they are 0-1 against Midwestern State, having lost to the Mustangs earlier this year by a 2-1 score. Lindsey Slocum took the loss in the game for UNO, allowing one earned run off six hits in the Missouri Southern Terri Mathis Zenner Memorial Tournament on March 7. Slocum and Meneely had UNO's only two hits off pitcher Katie Petersen.
Mavericks Jump to 16th Nationally
The Mavericks received their highest ranking since the preseason as they earned a No. 16 spot in last Wednesday's National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll. Nebraska-Omaha (45-9) jumped seven spots after being 23rd last week. The Mavs started the year 12th and then dropped out for seven weeks before a school-record winning streak helped them climb back in.
The Mavericks are now the top-ranked MIAA team in the poll as Emporia State, previously No. 9, fell to 17th. The two are the only MIAA teams getting votes.
Another national poll is expected this Wednesday.
Nine Mavs Earn All-MIAA Honors
Beth Haley earned MIAA pitcher of the year honor and was one of five Mavericks on the all-MIAA first team announced last Thursday before the first round of the conference tournament. Nine Mavericks earned a recognition with one second-teamer and three honorable mentions.
Head coach Jeanne Scarpello was named co-coach of the year, sharing the honor with Emporia State's coach. The two teams tied for the regular season championship.
The Mavs made big improvements in postseason honors. In their first year in the league last year, the Mavs didn't place a single player on the first team.
Haley was named a first team pitcher with a 20-2 record and 1.55 ERA. Lindsey Slocum earned first team as a utility player. She's right behind Haley in the circle with a 1.61 ERA and she's batting .373, playing outfield when she doesn't pitch. Treightin Yates was named first team at second base and she's second in the league with a .451 batting average. Catcher Kristi Meneely also earned a first team spot. She's batting .356 with a .994 fielding percentage behind the plate. First baseman Kristin Wellwood rounded out UNO's first team selections. She's batting .343 with a .988 fielding percentage.
Outfielder Alli Hukill was UNO's lone second team selection. Shortstop Mollly Feichtinger, outfielder Katelyn Hinton and designated hitter Julia Krejci earned honorable mention.
Mavs Set Home Run Record
The Mavericks hit six home runs during the MIAA tournament to help grown their school-record single season total. They now have 62, breaking 2003's record of 54. Alli Hukill had six in one weekend this year she's tied with Lindsey Slocum with 12, the fifth highest total in school history. 21 is the individual record and three more would put them in second.
Offense and Pitchers On Pace For Other Records
UNO's .345 team batting average is on pace to be the second best in school history. The 1994 team hit .358 to set the record (1,000 at-bat minimum). The Mavericks are currently second with 350 RBI and need 16 more to move to first. 366 is the record set in 1994. The pitching staff is also on pace to enter the record book. The Mavs are averaging 5.87 strikeouts per game, currently the fourth best average. The 332 strikeouts is sixth and UNO needs 18 to get to third.
Slocum's Fifth MIAA Honor Gives Mavs Eight
The Mavs have earned eight MIAA athlete of the week honors this year. Lindsey Slocum was named pitcher of the week May 5 and she swept both hitter and pitcher of the week honors on March 29 and April 27. Beth Haley was named pitcher of the week twice and Alli Hukill was hitter of the week once.
Slocum pitched 15 2/3 innings last week without allowing an earned run, walk or extra-base hit. She went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 11 strikeouts. She nearly threw her second perfect game of the year two week ago. She ended the week 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA. April 24 at Truman, she started game two and faced the minimum 15 batters as the Mavericks invoked the run rule after five innings. On an 0-2 count, she allowed a leadoff single in the first inning, and then that base runner was thrown out trying to steal second. That hit was the only thing that kept her from a perfect game, as she retired her and the next 14 batters in order. Slocum, who shared last week's hitter of the week honor with Emporia State's Angela Mahan, batted .500 (6-for-12), drove in four and scored six runs. She had at least one hit and one run in each game. While nearly throwing a perfect game in the nightcap Saturday against Truman, Slocum went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run.
She earned both the MIAA pitcher and hitter of the week on March 29. She threw a perfect game March 28 and went 2-0 during the week with a 0.95 ERA. On top of throwing a perfect game, Slocum produced huge numbers at the plate. Slocum had eight hits that week while allowing batters just nine in three appearances. She scored five runs and drove in eight while allowing just two runs to score against her.
Hukill's six home runs and Haley's no-hitter helped the Mavericks sweep the honors on April 19. Hukill hit six home runs during the MIAA Northern Crossover to earn all-tournament MVP honors. Haley threw a no-hitter April 13 against Northwest Missouri and ended the week 3-0 with a 0.40 ERA.
Haley earned her first honor on March 22 after she went 2-0 with a save in three appearances and a perfect 0.00 ERA.
Slocum and Haley Give Mavs Two No-Hitters
The Maverick pitching staff has produced two no-hitters this year, both of them in MIAA games. Lindsey Slocum had a perfect game on March 28 against Missouri Southern and Beth Haley threw a no-no April 13 against Northwest Missouri.
Slocum's gem helped head coach Jeanne Scarpello set the UNO coaching win record with her 460th win. Slocum faced the minimum 15 batters and struck out 10 of them. No Lion put a ball in play in fair territory until the fifth inning when the lead off hitter flew out to center field. The next batter tried bunting to get on, but Slocum fielded the ball and threw her out at first. She then got the next batter to pop up to Treightin
Yates at second base to give her the gem.
Haley took a perfect game into the seventh inning against NWMSU and then walked and hit a batter before closing out a no-hitter. Haley didn't allow a batted ball to leave the infield. She struck out four and 13 of the 21 outs were ground outs. She also caught three batted balls, including two liners back to her. With a full count and two outs in the seventh, Haley walked Erin Leslie, giving up a chance at perfection. She then hit the next batter before getting the final Bearcat batter to foul out to first baseman Kristin Wellwood.
Scarpello Reigns as UNO's Wins Leader
Maverick head coach Jeanne Scarpello entered the year as UNO's leader in winning percentage and on March 28 she became the school's leader in total wins. She's currently 491-150-1 with a .766 winning percentage.
Scarpello, in her 11th year at UNO, surpassed Mary Yori, her predecessor on the win chart. Yori won 459 wins from 1989-99.
Mavericks Lead League in Batting and Pitching
The Mavericks lead the MIAA with a .344 batting average and they were 10th in the nation as of the May 9 NCAA statistic report. Treightin Yates leads the team with a .451 average and she's second in the MIAA and 23rd in the nation. Lindsey Slocum is ninth in the conference batting .369 on the year.
The Mavericks also lead the conference with a 1.79 ERA, the only one below 2.00 among the 11 teams. Their pitchers make up three of the top five ERAs in the league. Lindsey Slocum is second with a 1.66 mark and Beth Haley is third with a 1.80 ERA. Melissa Negrete is fifth with a 1.98 mark.
Yates Leading Team at the Plate
Senior second baseman Treightin Yates started the year on a 12-game hitting streak, building her average to .463 at the time. Since then, she has hit safely in all but 12 games and her average has only slipped to .451, best on the team and second in the MIAA.
Yates has 29 multi-hit games and 14 mulit-RBI games. She batted .516 in the 20 MIAA games.
Haley Nearly Perfect During Winning Streak
Junior pitcher Beth Haley allowed just nine earned runs in the 88 innings she pitched during UNO's school-record 27-game winning streak that ended in the MIAA tournament. She went 14-0 with a 0.72 ERA and allowed just seven extra-base hits. She gave up 13 walks with 61 strikeouts.
Slocum's Bat Kept in Lineup at All Times
Lindsey Slocum, one of the top pitchers and hitters in the MIAA, has a place in the batting order no matter the situation. She is second on the team batting .369 overall. When she gets the start as a pitcher, she is batting .400 and when she doesn't start, she plays in the outfield and in those situations, she's batting .340. Six of her home runs and 39 of her RBI came while an outfielder and five homers and 21 RBI came as a pitcher.
In the MIAA tournament she batted 5 for 10 as a pitcher and 1 for 8 as an outfielder. She had two homers and seven RBI as a pitcher and just one RBI as an outfielder.
On a doubleheader on March 28 against Missouri Southern, Slocum hit a grand slam as an outfielder in game one and then tossed a perfect game in the second game.
Batting Around...
• The Mavs had gone 15 straight games without allowing opponents to score more than two runs. That streak was broken by ESU in the tournament when the Hornets scored four in the semifinal.
• The following players have started every game this year at their respective positions: Alli Hukill (RF), Treightin Yates (2B), Kristi Meneely (C) and Kristin Wellwood (1B).
• Slocum has started every game as either the pitcher or center fielder. She has batted in the fifth spot in the lineup every time until getting moved to the No. 3 spot in the final four games of the MIAA tournament. Haley took a perfect game into the seventh inning against NWMSU and then walked and hit a batter before closing out a no-hitter. Haley didn't allow a batted ball to leave the infield. She struck out four and 13 of the 21 outs were ground outs. She also caught three batted balls, including two liners back to her. With a full count and two outs in the seventh, Haley walked Erin Leslie, giving up a chance at perfection. She then hit the next batter before getting the final Bearcat batter to foul out to first baseman Kristin Wellwood.
Scarpello Reigns as UNO's Wins Leader
Maverick head coach Jeanne Scarpello entered the year as UNO's leader in winning percentage and on March 28 she became the school's leader in total wins. She's currently 491-150-1 with a .766 winning percentage.
Scarpello, in her 11th year at UNO, surpassed Mary Yori, her predecessor on the win chart. Yori won 459 wins from 1989-99.
Mavericks Lead League in Batting and Pitching
The Mavericks lead the MIAA with a .344 batting average and they were 10th in the nation as of the May 9 NCAA statistic report. Treightin Yates leads the team with a .451 average and she's second in the MIAA and 23rd in the nation. Lindsey Slocum is ninth in the conference batting .369 on the year.
The Mavericks also lead the conference with a 1.79 ERA, the only one below 2.00 among the 11 teams. Their pitchers make up three of the top five ERAs in the league. Lindsey Slocum is second with a 1.66 mark and Beth Haley is third with a 1.80 ERA. Melissa Negrete is fifth with a 1.98 mark.
Yates Leading Team at the Plate
Senior second baseman Treightin Yates started the year on a 12-game hitting streak, building her average to .463 at the time. Since then, she has hit safely in all but 12 games and her average has only slipped to .451, best on the team and second in the MIAA.
Yates has 29 multi-hit games and 14 mulit-RBI games. She batted .516 in the 20 MIAA games.
Haley Nearly Perfect During Winning Streak
Junior pitcher Beth Haley allowed just nine earned runs in the 88 innings she pitched during UNO's school-record 27-game winning streak that ended in the MIAA tournament. She went 14-0 with a 0.72 ERA and allowed just seven extra-base hits. She gave up 13 walks with 61 strikeouts.
Slocum's Bat Kept in Lineup at All Times
Lindsey Slocum, one of the top pitchers and hitters in the MIAA, has a place in the batting order no matter the situation. She is second on the team batting .369 overall. When she gets the start as a pitcher, she is batting .400 and when she doesn't start, she plays in the outfield and in those situations, she's batting .340. Six of her home runs and 39 of her RBI came while an outfielder and five homers and 21 RBI came as a pitcher.
In the MIAA tournament she batted 5 for 10 as a pitcher and 1 for 8 as an outfielder. She had two homers and seven RBI as a pitcher and just one RBI as an outfielder.
On a doubleheader on March 28 against Missouri Southern, Slocum hit a grand slam as an outfielder in game one and then tossed a perfect game in the second game.
Batting Around...
• The Mavs had gone 15 straight games without allowing opponents to score more than two runs. That streak was broken by ESU in the tournament when the Hornets scored four in the semifinal.
• The following players have started every game this year at their respective positions: Alli Hukill (RF), Treightin Yates (2B), Kristi Meneely (C) and Kristin Wellwood (1B).
• Slocum has started every game as either the pitcher or center fielder. She has batted in the fifth spot in the lineup every time until getting moved to the No. 3 spot in the final four games of the MIAA tournament. She batted .370 in the first 56 games in the No. 5 spot and then in the No. 3 spot she's batted .357 (5 for 14).
• The Mavs have had 10 hits or more in 31 of their 60 games this year. The pitching staff has allowed double-digit hits just five times this year. ESU's 14 in the MIAA final was the most since Augustana got 15 on April 11.
• The Mavs have two grand slams this year. Slocum hit one on March 28 against MSSU and Hukill hit one on April 18 against UCM.
• Katelyn Hinton leads the Mavs with 10 stolen bases. Alli Hukill and Lindsey Redding are second with nine each.
• Alli Hukill leads the Mavs with four outfield assists.
• Julia Krejci is 4 for 5 as a pinch hitter and Molly Negrete is 3 for 12. Overall, UNO is 10 for 26 (.385) in pinch-hit situations with 10 RBI.
Coming Up Next
The winner's of the two South Central Region tournaments will meet next week in a best-of-three super regional at the sight of the highest seeded team. The two teams will play once on Friday, May 21, and once or twice (if needed) on Saturday, May 22.
The eight teams that win their super regionals will advance to the NCAA national tournament in St. Joseph, Mo., from May 27-31.
