South Central Region Webpage
The Nebraska-Omaha baseball team received an at-large bid to its sixth-straight NCAA Regional tournament and will be the sixth seed in the six-team tournament in Warrensburg, Mo., on May 13-16. The Mavericks will square off with No. 1 seed and host school, Central Missouri (40-8), on Thursday, May 13 at 3:30 p.m. at Crane Stadium/Thompkins Field.
The NCAA Regional tournament is double elimination format, so regardless of what happens on Thursday, UNO will play at least one more game on Friday, May 14. If the Mavs win on Thursday, they will play in the middle game at 3:30 p.m. A loss on Thursday would put the Mavs in the 12 p.m. game.
UNO's road to the 2010 Division II Baseball Championship will be a challenging one as all of its potential opponents in the South Central Region are ranked in the top 30 nationally, including three of the schools in the top 10. UCM (No. 1 seed) is No. 3, Abilene Christian (No. 2 seed) is ranked seventh, Emporia State (No. 3 seed) is No. 10, Incarnate Word (No. 4 seed) is ranked 26th and St. Mary's (No. 5 seed) is ranked No. 30.
UNO at NCAA Regional Tournaments
This season's bid to the NCAA Regional marks the sixth consecutive and the 10th time in school history a UNO team has earned a trip to the tournament. UNO is 18-16 all time in NCAA Regional contests. The Mavericks are 11-10 in NCAA Regional games under head coach #Bob Herold#, who is currently in his 11th season. The Mavericks have now advanced to the NCAA Regional tournament in 1976, 1977, 1981, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
The Series
The Mules lead the Mavericks 18-10 in the all-time series. UNO is 3-5 all-time against UCM in postseason play, including a 2-4 mark in NCAA Tournament play. UNO and UCM are becoming familiar foes as Thursday's tilt will mark the sixth time (2nd time in postseason) in the last 13 days that the two teams will square off. The Mules won a 12-inning contest on May 7 at the MIAA Baseball Championship, 10-9. The last time the two teams collided in a regional game was last year when the Mules ended the Mavs' season with a 14-1 victory on May 16.

The Coaches
#Bob Herold# is in his 11th season as head coach of the Mavericks. The 1972 graduate of UNO was a 1971 NAIA All-American for the Mavericks. He is 374-222 (.627) all-time as a college head coach and has led UNO to six-straight NCAA Regional tournaments, with seven total appearances. The Maverick skipper picked up his 350th career win on March 7, 2010 with a 9-8 win over Missouri Southern State. Herold is assisted by Chris Gadsden (11th Season) and Dan McGinn (10th Season).

Freshman of the Year
True freshman #Tyler Splichal# is second on the team with a .403 average, 77 hits and is slugging .597. He leads the team with 21 doubles, which is tied for 20th in Division II and is third on UNO's single-season list. Splichal is second on the team with 24 multi hit games - including a team-high 14 three-hit games. The Bellevue, Neb., native has 10 multi RBI games, including one game with five RBI. Rarely a strikeout victim, Splichal has been sat down on strikes just 7 times in 191 at-bats this year. He is averaging a K in every 27.3 at-bats, which is tied for seventh on the NCAA's Toughest To Strike Out list in Division II.
Stop - a Thief!
With 14 stolen bags this season, junior #Travis Jacobi# is climbing up UNO's career stolen base list. He has 39 which is tied for ninth all-time with Rich Bernstein (1973-76). Jacobi, last year's team leader in SBs (15), is tied for first with #Jeremy Klein# in 2010. He is yet to be caught this season on 14 attempts. Jacobi matched his career-high earlier this season when he swiped three bags against Missouri Southern on March 6.
133 Straight For Klein
Senior shortstop #Jeremy Klein# joins fellow senior Andrew Hansen as the only two players on the squad that have started all of UNO's 50 games in 2010. Klein played in all of UNO's 61 games last season and has started 133-straight games. The streak began on April 15, 2008 against Fort Hays State. Klein is having a career season at the plate this season, collecting a career-high 60 hits, 15 doubles and two triples. He is tied for the team lead with 14 (on 18 attempts) stolen bases, also a career high for the Omaha, Neb., native. Klein has 16 multi hit games this season.
Stand 'Em Up, Sit 'Em Down
#Joe Holtmeyer#, the MIAA's reigning Pitcher of the Year leads the team with a 9-1 record in 82 innings of work. The sophomore had his roughest outing of the season on May 7 in UNO's 10-9 loss to Central Missouri in 12 innings. He allowed eight runs - all earned, on 10 hits, which were all season highs. He matched his season low with six strikeouts in the game. Holtmeyer broke UNO's 49-year old school record for strikeouts in a season set by Barry Miller in 1961, recording his 113th strikeout of the season. The sophomore topped it off by throwing UNO's first complete-game no-hitter since 1995 in an 8-1 win over Northwest Missouri State on April 24.
The right-hander leads all of NCAA Baseball – Division I, II or III, with 143 strikeouts, 15.70 strikeouts per nine innings (minimum 40 IP) and is tops with 4.39 hits allowed per nine innings. In his last eight outings, Holtmeyer has been a strikeout machine, fanning 98 batters with double-digit K's in seven of those eight contests. He has tossed a no-hitter, four-straight complete games - with six total complete games, three one-hitters, one complete-game shut out and one shared shut out (with Brandon Dahl against Southwest Baptist on April 2) in that span. Holtmeyer's 220 career strike outs rank third in UNO history and trail Mike Metz who is second all time with 226 Ks from 1975-78.

Senior #Andrew Hansen# has started all 50 games at second base in 2010. He has started 110-straight games since transferring to UNO in 2009. Hansen's 49-straight games of reaching base came to an end when he did not get on against Fort Hays State on May 6. He currently ranks third on UNO's all-time list with a career batting average of .378. Hansen's 50 career doubles is second on UNO's all-time list. Hansen led the nation with 33 doubles last season and has 17 on the year in 2010.
Lundy Lifts Hit Streak to 20 Games
Senior center fielder #Tyler Lundy# leads the Mavericks with a .445 batting average, 85 hits, 43 runs, four triples, eight HRs, 54 RBI and is slugging .696. His 85 hits and .445 BA are currently tops the MIAA. Lundy is riding an 20-game hitting streak, the longest by a Maverick this season, and the longest since #Andrew Hansen# compiled a 20-game streak last season. The 20-game streak is the longest by any UNO batter in the last decade. Lundy has 37 hits with 19 RBI and is hitting .481 in that stretch. His 85 hits rank fourth-best in a single season by a UNO player and rank 28th in Division II.
Lundy has a team-leading 26 multi hit games to go along with his 16 multi RBI games this season. Lundy helped lead the Mavs to a 12-2 win when he scattered five hits against Missouri Western on April 21. He had a five-RBI game against Emporia State on March 29.
Dahl Nears Saves Mark
Senior closer #Brandon Dahl# has been a reliable arm out of the UNO bullpen this season. Dahl is tops on the Mavericks' pitching staff with a 1.77 ERA on the season. He has worked 20 1/3 innings and has 20 strike outs with eight walks. The right-hander leads the team with three saves this season and has yielded just four earned runs on 17 hits.
He has 14 career saves which ranks third all-time in UNO history - Dahl is two saves behind Shawn Smith for second all-time. Dahl tossed a scoreless inning in his school record 58th career appearance on April 25 to pass Chris Irsfeld who made 57 appearances in a UNO jersey in the early 90s. When Dahl finished the second game for UNO on May 2 in the Mavs' 17-3 loss to Central Missouri, he became UNO's all-time leader in games finished with 40 in his career.
Utility Man
#Colby McCord# has been the jack of all trades for the Mavs this season. He has seen action behind the plate as catcher in 11 games, has been the DH in the lineup 12 times where he is hitting .382 and on the mound with a 2-1 record in nine appearances and a 4.12 ERA in 24 innings of work. He is averaging a strikeout per inning with 24 Ks this year.
Tew Becoming UNO's No. 2
Freshman right-hander #Matt Tew# is second on the team with five wins, 52 innings pitched and 10 starts. He has an ERA of 4.50, which is fourth on the team.
Takin' One For The Team
#Jake Benne# has been hit by a pitch 15 times this year, which leads the team. He was hit twice in a game against Pittsburg State on Feb. 27 which is a season high. Benne is tied for sixth on UNO's single-season list in the HBP category.
Hohl-elujah!
Sophomore #Brady Hohl# is third on the team with a .353 batting average. His 60 hits are tied for fourth on the team and his 42 RBI rank second. Hohl has 10 doubles, two triples, one home run and 16 walks this season. The Omaha, Neb., native has started 49 of UNO's 50 games, making 40 starts at third base. He has recorded 17 multi hit games on the year with 12 multi RBI games.
Urban Legend
Junior #Tim Urban#, who has started a team-high 22 games as the designated hitter in the UNO lineup, launched two home runs against Missouri Western in the Mavs' 12-2 win on April 21. Urban is hitting .310 on the year as DH with 18 hits, 15 RBI, three doubles and three home runs.
