Mavs Fall to Mules 9-3 in First Round of Regionals

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The No. 6 seed Nebraska-Omaha baseball team (32-19) opened the NCAA South Central Regional tournament with a 9-3 loss to No. 1 seed Central Missouri (48-8) Thursday night at Crane Stadium/Tomkins Field.
The game was originally scheduled for 3 p.m., but rain put a damper on the original tournament schedule, forcing the Mavericks and the Mules to play at 7 p.m.
UCM got out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, but UNO responded with two runs in the top of the third on RBI singles from Jake Benne and Tyler Splichal.
The Mules put up three in the bottom half of the inning. Jon Wegener hit a two-run single to put UCM up 6-2. The score didn't change until the Mavericks' #Tyler Lundy ripped an RBI double to center field in the seventh to score Brady Hohl# from first base.
The Mules' first baseman Nick DeBiasse extended the UCM lead to 9-3 when he blasted a three-run home run off of #Colby McCord# in the bottom of the eighth. DeBiasse had four RBI in the game.
Both teams brought their ace to the hill as sophomore #Joe Holtmeyer# squared off against senior Brooks Martin. Holtmeyer, recently named the South Central Region Pitcher of the Year threw well, but it was Martin who tossed a complete-game gem in the win and improve to 11-0 on the year.
Martin went all nine innings and recorded 11 strikeouts in his third complete game of the year. He allowed three runs – all earned, on eight hits with two walks.
Holtmeyer (9-2) suffered his first loss since March 11 against Concordia University (Minn.). He lasted 5 1/3 innings, allowing six runs – four earned, on seven hits while striking out nine and walking three batters.
UNO will play St. Mary's (Texas), the No. 5 seed, in an elimination game at 12 p.m. on Friday, May 14. St. Mary's (39-18 overall) dropped its first-round game 10-2, to No. 2 seed Abilene Christian on Thursday afternoon.
NOTES: #Tyler Lundy# extended his hitting streak to 21 games, the longest by a Maverick in the last decade…UNO is now 3-6 all-time against UCM in postseason play (2-5 in NCAA tournament) and is 0-2 in 2010 against the Mules in postseason play…The Mavericks are now 18-17 all-time in NCAA Regional games and are 11-11 under head coach #Bob Herold#…#Joe Holtmeyer# now has 152 Ks on the year and moved into second on UNO's all-time career list with 229, passing Mike Metz who recorded 226 in his career from 1975-78…Holtmeyer is just one strike out shy of tying the MIAA's single-season record of 153 set by Rich Nilges of Lincoln University in 1975.
