OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - #Emma Wright#'s solo homer in game one Saturday helped the Mavs force a second game in the MIAA postseason tournament championship series but Emporia State ran away with game two to take the title and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Nebraska-Omaha won the opener, 6-2 and then the Hornets took the title with a 10-1 win.
The Mavericks (49-11), ranked fifth in the latest South Central Region ranking, will await Monday morning's NCAA tournament announcement. The tournament field is expected to be announced on NCAA.com at 9 a.m. Monday. UNO has been to 20 straight NCAA tournaments.
Wright got the 16th-ranked Mavs on the board in the second inning of the opener. #Lindsey Slocum made it 2-0 when she drove in a run in the third. After Alli Hukill# drove one in in the fourth, Slocum got another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fifth to give UNO a 4-0 lead.
The 17th-ranked Hornets (48-12) got runs in the fifth and seventh but UNO added two in the top of the seventh off a two-run homer from Slocum. She ended that game 2 for 3 with four RBI and she earned the win in the circle, allowing four hits with 10 strikeouts. She improved to 20-2.
Both teams left the bases loaded in their half of the first inning in the second game. The Hornets then got all the runs they needed with six in the second inning. MIAA MVP Miranda Campbell hit a grand slam in that inning before UNO starter #Beth Haley was pulled for Melissa Negrete#.
Negrete went the final 5 2/3 innings and allowed four more runs and six hits. Haley (21-4) suffered the loss.
#Treightin Yates# gave UNO its only run with an RBI single in the fourth. She went 2 for 4 as the Mavs got just six hits.
