HARWICH, Mass. - Nebraska-Omaha pitcher #Joe Holtmeyer# made his debut on the hill in his first start on June 15 for his newest team, the Harwich Mariners - an amateur summer league team from the Cape Cod Baseball League, which nests many of the top college baseball players in the country.
Holtmeyer tossed six solid innings in Harwich's 3-1, 11-inning loss to the Chatham Anglers on Tuesday night at Whitehouse Field, home of the Mariners.
Holtmeyer (0-0) received a no-decision, giving up his only run - an earned run, in the first inning. He allowed four hits and issued two walks while striking out three batters. The right-hander faced a total of 21 batters in the game and threw 82 pitches (52 strikes). The Mariners dropped to 0-2 on the year with the loss.
Holtmeyer is the only player on the Mariners' 36-man roster that is from a Division II school. Most rosters in the 10-team league are made up of players from Division I schools.
The Mariners have 44 regular season contests scheduled from now until early August, with the playoffs beginning on Friday, August 6.
The CCBL, a wood bat league, is made up of 10 total teams that are split into East and West Divisions. Harwich is one of the five teams in the East Division of the CCBL – the West Division also has five teams. The Mariners won the CCBL title in 2008, their first time since 1987.
Recent Harwich Mariners that are now having success in Major League Baseball are: 2008 and 2009 NL Cy Young winner, Tim Lincecum (San Francisco Giants - RHP), Shaun Marcum (Toronto Blue Jays – RHP), Joe Saunders (Los Angeles Angels – LHP), Jason Bartlett (Tamp Bay Rays – SS) and Carlos Pena (Tampa Bay Rays – 1B).
