2010 CCBL Standings
HARWICH, Mass. - With five starts under his belt, #Joe Holtmeyer# is fitting in well on the Harwich Mariners' pitching staff. Holtmeyer (1-1) has an ERA of 2.76 on the season in 29 1/3 innings pitched in his first-ever stint in the Cape Cod Baseball League. He has given up 11 runs - nine earned, on 17 hits while striking out 28 and yielding 10 walks.
After going 5-9 in June, the Mariners have been one of the hottest teams in the month of July, going 13-4 so far. Now well over the halfway point of the season, Harwich is surging toward a playoff push with just 12 regular season games remaining on the schedule. Winners of 12 of its last 15 games, Harwich finds itself in third place in the Eastern Division with 36 points, trailing the second-place Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox by just two points. The Brewster Whitecaps currently own the best record in the league at 22-9 and are tops in the Eastern Division with 44 points.
Solid pitching by the Harwich staff, who has not allowed an earned run in 28 consecutive innings to go along with a bullpen that has compiled 35.2 straight scoreless innings has been a large part of the Mariners' red-hot play.
Holtmeyer took the hill against the first-place Whitecaps in his last start on July 17 and turned in his best performance in his longest outing of the summer. The right-hander tossed seven innings of one-hit ball, allowing just one run in the Mariners' 3-2 win. He matched his season high in strikeouts, fanning eight while issuing just one walk - his lowest total of the summer.
He is currently tied for ninth in the league with 28 strikeouts and his ERA of 2.76 ranks 23rd.
Holtmeyer should see his next start by early next week. Check OMavs.com all summer for more coverage of Holtmeyer and the Mariners as they make their playoff push.
Q&A with Joe
OMavs.com: The team is having an excellent month of July so far with a 13-4 record and recently hurdled above the .500 mark for the first time all season. Is the team getting more comfortable playing with each other and gelling together now?
Joe Holtmeyer: We have been playing hard as a team since day one. At the beginning of the season, we would lose very close games. Now we're winning those close games. We just started being loose, and everyone is adjusting to the league. The major difference is the team is having more fun, and everyone wants to go home with a championship.
OMavs.com: Since your first start for the Mariners in June, what part(s) of your game do you feel that you've improved on the most?
JH: I feel that my approach has improved the most. During the school season, I would try to blow fastballs by almost everybody. It can work for me sometimes, but here I'll get ahead in the count with fastballs, and use my change-up or curve to get an out.
OMavs.com: You're surrounded by a talented group of arms on the Harwich pitching staff. How beneficial has that been for you to give each other pointers and tips?
JH: The pitching staff is great. We help each other out with anything. We all pick up things here just by watching everyone compete. It's really cool how we can pick up minor things that one person does and then incorporate it into our game.
OMavs.com: How has the adjustment to living far from home been for you now that you've been away from Nebraska for more than a month?
JH: It's tough being away from family and friends, but we have it pretty good here. We all stay with great host families, and the team is like a family. We all just want to get a championship before we all go home.
OMavs.com: Other than baseball, are there any other activities that you have time for?
JH: It's pretty much baseball everyday and there's not much off time. I do camps in the mornings with kids and then a couple hours later we have to be at the field. I've been fishing a couple times in the harbor next to my house, but that's about it. I get to the beach a couple days a week, but other than that I'm pretty busy with ball.
OMavs: What's the atmosphere like at Whitehouse Field (home of the Mariners) on game day?
JH: The atmosphere at the field is great. We usually get around a thousand people or more. It makes it really fun to pitch at the field when there are a lot of people like that.
In His Own Words: Holtmeyer from Harwich Blog
The team has been doing really good. Our record is 18-14 right now, which makes us third in our division. The top four teams (from the Eastern and Western Divisions) advance into the playoffs. We have been playing really well as a team. The hitters have really improved with situational hitting. The pitchers have been dealing out great outings. Everything has been going really smooth this last month. We've been having fun and winning a lot of ball games.
There has been a lot of major league talent here and we have seen a couple pros. There are a couple guys in the league that are first-round draft picks that are waiting for bigger signing bonuses. It's fun to play against guys like that to see how we match up. All the teams got to go to Fenway Park for a scout day. There was a scout from every major league team there. When my team was there, John Lackey and Josh Beckett were throwing bullpens. It was pretty cool to go up to them and talk with them for a bit
