Mavericks Blitz Field For Win In Season Opener

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The UNO golf team earned its first win of the new season with a wire-to-wire victory at the Lady Reiver Fall Classic hosted by Iowa Western Community College. #Dani Suponchick# was the individual medalist as the Mavericks won by 31 strokes at the Bent Tree Golf Club.
The Mavs had two separate teams competing in the event – the “Mav” team and the “O” team. The “Mav” team, led by Suponchick, finished the two-day tournament with a team score of 618. Fellow MIAA team Missouri Western was second at 649. UNO's “O” team finished in third with a score of 670.
Fresh off a score of 71 in the opening round, Suponchick fired a 77 on Friday to earn the top overall spot with a score of 148. #Ricca Soper# carded a 75 in round two to finish second overall at 155. #Amy Powell# was third for UNO and fourth overall after shooting a two-day score of 158. #Rebecca Pollock# was one stroke behind at 159, good for fifth overall. #Armana Christianson# wrapped up the scoring for the “Mav” team with a two-day total of 160.
Freshman Brooke Thilges led the “O” team after closing with a 78 on Friday. She posted a two-round score of 161, good for a tie for eighth overall. #Elizabeth Havekost and Melyssa Doerr# each shot 162 to tie for 13th, and #Christina VonRiesen# had 177 to tie for 21st.
The Mavericks are back on the course next Monday, Sept. 13 for the Drury University Fall Shootout in Springfield, Mo.
