OMAHA, Neb. -- #Heather Pohl# scored a career-high 27 points, but the UNO women's basketball team was unable to completely recover after falling behind early, as Southwest Baptist knocked off the Mavs at the Sapp Fieldhouse on Wednesday, 76-68.
UNO dropped to 5-8 overall and 2-7 in the MIAA. The Bearcats improved to 6-7 overall and 3-6 in the MIAA.
Pohl's 27 points came on 10-of-18 field goals, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range. #Paige Frauendorfer# added 11 for UNO, while #Jamie Nash# totaled seven points, eight assists and six rebounds.
The Bearcats jumped out quickly to a 20-6 lead after hitting 9-of-11 (81.8 percent) to start the game. Jaquavia Couch, who came in averaging 6.7 points per game, had 11 of her team-high 21 points off the bench not even halfway through the first half. On the other end, UNO hit just 3-of-12 (25 percent) to start the game.
The Mavs slowly chipped away at the lead though. Pohl scored 18 points by the 6:38 mark of the first half, including three 3-pointers, and UNO drew within five at 34-29 on a fast-break layup by #Sara Reeves#.
Southwest Baptist took a 42-33 lead into the locker room at halftime after hitting 57.1 percent from the field in the first half (16-of-28).
The Mavs trailed 45-33 after SBU's Jacqui Zelenka hit a 3-pointer to open the second half, but UNO then picked up the pace.
Pohl made a layup, then #Jessica Zaruba# scored a layup off a fast-break pass from Pohl. Frauendorfer then made a fast-break layup, Zaruba connected on a driving basket into the lane, and Pohl nailed a 3-pointer off a pass from Zaruba to get within one at 45-44, as the Mavs continued to push the ball.
The Bearcats pounded the ball inside though to extend the lead back to 58-50 with 11:40 to play in the game. Reeves hit a bucket in the lane, then Nash hit a 3-pointer to make it 58-55, but Southwest Baptist had an answer like they did all night, as Tanis Spani hit a 3-pointer from the corner to push the lead back to 61-55.
#Carly Cator# connected on a 3-pointer at the 7:42 mark that brought UNO back within three points at 63-60. After an SBU free throw, Frauendorfer hit a pull-up jumper in transition to cut the lead to 64-62, and after an SBU turnover, Reeves made a layup off a nice pass from Nash to tie the game.
Again, the Bearcats had an answer though. Zelenka scored down low, drew the foul and hit the free throw to put SBU back up by three with 4:24 remaining.
#Katie Kane#'s bucket at the 2:34 mark got UNO back down by one at 69-68, but Couch hit a layup after an offensive rebound to push the Bearcats back to a three-point cushion, and Ashleigh Gallio made two free throws to make it 73-68 with 1:03 left. The Bearcats hit free throws the rest of the way to seal the win and hand the Mavs just their second loss at home this season.
UNO hosts Missouri Southern on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse.
