Missouri Southern Snaps Maverick Win Streak

OMAHA, Neb. -- The UNO men's basketball team saw its six-game win streak snapped Saturday afternoon, as league leader Missouri Southern took a 98-85 victory at Sapp Fieldhouse. With the loss, the Mavericks are 9-5 (6-4 MIAA), while MSSU improves to 13-1 (9-1 MIAA).
Nebraska-Omaha was led offensively by senior guard #Tyler Bullock#, who had 26 points on 8-for-15 shooting. Bullock added a career-high nine assists and also pulled down five rebounds. He was joined in double figures by junior guard #Mitch Albers# (19), senior guard #Jeff Martin# (15) and senior guard #Torrian Harris# (10). Harris also topped the Mavs on the boards, grabbing eight boards, and Martin shot 4-for-7 from 3-point range.
The Lions were paced by Jason Adams, who finished with 31 points and a team-best seven rebounds. He shot 11-for-16 from the field, including 5-for-8 from behind the arc. Marquis Addison (17), Skyler Bowlin (11) and Patrick Hester (11) also achieved double figures. As a team, MSSU was 50 percent from long range.
The first half was nothing short of a close game, as the score tied on 10 occasions, and neither team took more than a five-point advantage at any time. Missouri Southern shot 64 percent (7-for-11) from behind the arc, while the Mavs were 6-for-12 from long range and 16-for-29 (55 percent) from the field. Bullock and Adams both notched 14 points in the first half.
Early on, Martin tied it up at 15-all with a swift 3-pointer off an assist from Bullock. Martin hit another triple just a minute later, but Patrick Hester responded with one of his own. Albers poured in a pair of free throws to put the Mavs back out front, and Martin tossed in another trey -- his third straight -- to make it 25-20.
After the Lions regained the lead, Bullock kept it in check with a 3-pointer. Bullock then fed a quick pass to redshirt freshman #Matt Hagerbaumer#, who went in for the dunk, and later added a layup to match the score at 34-34. In the final two minutes of the half, Missouri Southern went up by five points, but Albers hit a jumper and Bullock dropped in a triple with seven seconds to go, cutting the Lions' lead to 49-47 by halftime.
Four minutes into the second stanza, Albers banked in a three to bring it to 59-59, but Southern went on a 9-0 run capped by a dunk from Adams. Bullock then had two straight buckets and senior Matt Starks had another field goal off freshman #Caleb Steffensmeier#'s second consecutive assist, bringing UNO within three. Down 70-65, Steffensmeier chipped in five points to keep the Mavs alive, and they took back the lead at 76-75 on a layup by Harris.
The final two minutes were crucial again, as MSSU took the momentum for a 92-82 lead with 1:43 to go. The Mavs would not surrender, however, cutting the advantage to two on another trey by Steffensmeier with 50 seconds left.
With eight seconds remaining and the score at 97-93, Harris dropped in a layup. Addison responded by making one of his two free throws, and in the final drive down the court, UNO just missed a last-second 3-pointer, giving the Lions the 98-95 win.
UNO returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 19, traveling to Pittsburg State. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Pittsburg, Kan.
