The UNO women's basketball team returns home for a Wednesday night game against Truman at the Sapp Fieldhouse at 5:30 p.m.
The Mavericks are coming off a 71-63 loss at Missouri Western on Sunday, while the Bulldogs went on the road to defeat Fort Hays State on Monday, 54-45, for their fourth straight road win.
UNO leads the all-time series 5-2 and has won three of the four meetings since the Mavericks joined the MIAA in 2008-09. UNO and Truman split the season series in 2009-10. The Mavericks won at Truman on Jan. 6, 2010, 58-44. The Bulldogs answered the bell in the rematch in Omaha on Feb. 13, 2010, running away with a 59-52 win.
Truman ranks 11th in the MIAA in scoring offense, averaging 60.3 points per game. However, the Bulldogs rank second in scoring defense, allowing just 58.3 points per game, and they rank first in conference games only, surrendering just 58.2 points per game to MIAA opponents. The Mavericks lead the MIAA in steals (11.4 per game) and free throw percentage (74.6 percent).
Wednesday's game can be heard on 90.7 FM KVNO, or it can be viewed online with a B2 membership. On Saturday, UNO hits the road for a 1:30 p.m., contest at Central Missouri.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: TRUMAN BULLDOGS
Truman (6-4, 4-2) started MIAA play on a roll, winning their first three games by an average margin of 8.3 points per game, with two of those wins coming on the road. After that, though, the Bulldogs lost two straight MIAA games to ranked foes in Emporia State and Washburn. The Bulldogs then defeated Illinois-Springfield, 67-50, in a mid-season non-conference game on Dec. 29, before stealing a road win at Fort Hays State, 54-45, on Monday night. The Bulldogs have won four straight road games, including three MIAA road games, and are 4-1 on the road this season.
Junior guard Breanna Daniels leads the Bulldogs in scoring at 15.7 points per game and ranks fourth in the MIAA. Freshman forward Nicole Gloor has only started two of 10 games for Truman, but is second on the team in scoring at 11.6 points per game. The rest of the squad is balanced with seven players averaging between 2.9 and 5.7 points per game. Truman ranks 11th in the MIAA in scoring offense, averaging 60.3 points per game. However, the Bulldogs rank second in scoring defense, allowing just 58.3 points per game.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE MAVS: MISSOURI WESTERN 71, UNO 63
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Despite a career-high 17 points from freshman Amanda Woodring and a double-double by Jamie Nash, the UNO women's basketball team dropped an MIAA road game at Missouri Western on Sunday afternoon, 71-63.
The Mavericks fell to 1-5 in conference play and 4-6 overall. The Griffons, who are unbeaten in six home games at the MWSU Fieldhouse, moved to 4-2 against MIAA competition and 7-3 overall.
Trailing by nine points with 13:20 to play, the Mavs found energy off the bench from the freshman Woodring. Averaging 1.3 points per game coming into Sunday, Woodring hit back-to-back 3-pointers, then assisted on a Nash 3-pointer to tie the game at 45-45 with 12:23 remaining, a 9-0 UNO run in less than a minute. After an old-fashioned 3-point play by Missouri Western's Rachel Luteyn, Woodring hit another 3-pointer to even the game back up at 48-48. From then on, however, the Griffons would take control, outscoring UNO 16-8 over the next 5:57.
Woodring finished with her career-high 17 points on 5-of-6 from 3-point range. She had scored 12 points total in the first nine games of the season. Nash finished with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Heather Pohl added 11 points for UNO.
The Mavs locked down on Missouri Western's All-MIAA performer Jessica Koch, holding the forward scoreless in the first half and limiting her to 10 points for the game. However, Koch shared the ball well with her teammates, recording 11 assists to help four Griffons score in double-figures.
LAST TIME THEY MET: TRUMAN 59, UNO 52
OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks erased an 11-point first-half deficit and led by five in the second half, but they couldn't hold off the Bulldogs in a 59-52 loss to Truman on Feb. 13, 2010 at Sapp Fieldhouse.
UNO's Ashley Nelson hit a layup to give the Mavs a five-point lead with 18:13 to play, their biggest of the day. After three ties, the Bulldogs took over for good with a 10-0 run that gave them a 51-44 lead with 6:13 remaining. Jamie Nash hit a layup with 1:18 to go to pull the Mavs within three, but Truman hit four straight free throws in the final minute to hold on.
The Mavs shot just 39 percent in the game, 24 percent in the second half, while the Bulldogs shot 42 percent as a team. Alyssa Green led UNO with 15 points and Nelson added 13. Heather Pohl led the Mavs with eight rebounds, and Nash and Green had three assists each. Nash added five steals.

UNO is 4-1 this year when its starters outscore the opponent's starters and is 0-5 when the opponent's starters outscore UNO's first five. The Mavericks' chances also hinge on winning the points off turnover battle. When outscoring opponents in points off turnovers, UNO is 4-1. When UNO's opponent scores more points off turnovers, the Mavs are 0-5.
Wood-Ring It Up
Freshman guard Amanda Woodring scored a career-high 17 points against Missouri Western, raining in 5-of-6 from long range. Woodring came into Sunday's game against the Griffons averaging 1.3 points per game and had scored 12 points in nine games this season before exploding for 17 against Missouri Western.
Stealing the Spotlight
Sophomore guard Jamie Nash ranked 15th nationally in steals per game in her freshman campaign in 2009-10, averaging 3.0 steals per contest. Nash was the highest-ranked MIAA player within the final NCAA Division II statistics report released in March, and her performance for the year earned her a spot on the conference's all-defensive team. This season, Nash recorded a career-high 11 steals in a 69-38 win over Calumet College on Nov. 27. Nash earned the first double-double of her career, as she also scored 13 points in the victory. Nash's 11 steals was one short of the school-record 12 steals, set by Linda Schabloske on Jan. 30, 1993.
Fresh Faces
Head Coach Patty Patton Shearer has eight newcomers on her young roster for 2010-11, highlighted by transfers in sophomore guard Carly Cator (San Francisco State), junior forwards Jasamine Reeves (Lon Morris JC) and Lauren Andrews (Labette CC). Three freshmen are competing for playing time this season: guard Amanda Woodring (Millard West) and forwards Stacia Gebers (Superior) and Jordan Spencer (Millard West). Two freshmen, guards Natasha Mueller (Seward) and Aisle Quinlan (Des Moines Dowling Catholic), are redshirting.
Mavs Chosen Eighth in MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll
Nebraska-Omaha was picked to finish eighth in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association's 2010-11 preseason polls, the league office announced in October. The preseason conference standings are chosen in a survey of MIAA head coaches and media members.
The Mavericks earned 43 points in the coaches poll and 66 in the media list. The 12 conference coaches selected Washburn as their preseason favorite, while media voters had the Lady Blues and defending national champion Emporia State tied for their top choice.
UNO Named to 2009-10 WBCA Academic Top 25
The 2009-10 UNO women's basketball team earned a spot on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, the WBCA announced in July. The list recognizes schools throughout the nation that carry the best overall team grade-point averages for the entire season.
The Mavs rounded out all NCAA Division II institutions at 25th, posting a team GPA of 3.403. It marked the first time since 2006-07 that UNO was included on the WBCA Academic Top 25.
