Frauendorfer Leads Mavs to Season-Opening Win

DENVER, Colo. - The UNO women's basketball team gave head coach Chance Lindley his first win in his Maverick debut on Friday, as the Mavs ran away from the Western State Mountaineers, 72-59, in the first game of the Metro State Classic at Auraria Event Center.
Junior Paige Frauendorfer stole the show - scoring 20 of her career-high 24 points in the first half and adding a career-high 12 rebounds for her second career double-double - and the Mavs dominated the paint to start the season 1-0. Western State, which returned every letterwinner from last year's 11-16 team, dropped to 0-1.
The win was the first for the Mavericks as a Division I program, as the school makes its transition to the Division I Summit League.
Frauendorfer lit up the scoreboard in the first half for 20 points, helping the Mavs build a 36-25 halftime lead. The Humphrey, Neb., native connected on 7-of-8 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the opening segment, nearly toppling her career high of 22 points in the first half alone.
The Mavs took an 11-10 lead with 13:02 remaining in the first half on a layup by Stacia Gebers, and UNO never trailed after that. Ahead 17-14 with 6:56 left in the first half, Frauendorfer scored seven straight points for UNO, sparking an 11-1 run that made it 28-15 with 4:20 to play.
A 15-2 UNO run in the second half broke open what was a 10-point game, and UNO led by as many as 25 late in the second half, but the Mountaineers whittled away the lead in the closing minutes. UNO doubled Western State's points in the paint, 36-18, and the Mavs outrebounded the Mountaineers, 45-32.
Junior point guard Jamie Nash added a double-double of her own with 14 points and 10 assists for her fifth career double-double. Nash also added six steals to lead the Mavs.
Heather Pohl added 11 points and eight rebounds for UNO. Newcomer Rese Huddlin contributed six points and five rebounds, while Zenta Liepa chipped in five points and five rebounds. Stacia Gebers had five points and six rebounds for the Mavs.
UNO shot 27-54 (50.0 percent) from the field for the game and used a zone defense to force Western State into a 7-33 (21.2 percent) performance from behind the arc.
The Mavs wrap up play at the Metro State Classic on Saturday at 6 p.m. (CT) when they take on host Metro State at the Auraria Event Center.
