Mavs Host Upper Iowa in Home Opener

The UNO Maverick women's basketball team plays its first home game as a Division I school on Tuesday, Nov. 15 when it hosts Upper Iowa at the Sapp Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. The game will also mark the home debut for new head coach Chance Lindley, who took over the program last April. Nebraska Omaha is in its first year as a reclassifying Division I school in 2011-12 and will play a full Summit League conference schedule in 2012-13. The Mavs began the season with a split of two games over the weekend at the Metro State Classic. On Friday, UNO defeated Western State 72-59 in Denver, Colo., then followed on Saturday with a 64-61 loss at Division II No. 7 Metro State.
The Teams
The UNO Mavericks enter Tuesday's game with a 1-1 record after splitting two games at the Metro State Classic in Denver over the weekend. Led by new head coach Chance Lindley, the Mavs are embarking on their first season as a Division I school. UNO won't begin a full Summit League schedule until 2012-13, but the Mavs will still play 12 games against Division I opponents this year, including three against Summit League schools. UNO returns four starters from last year's team that went 8-18 overall and 5-17 in the Division II MIAA. Paige Frauendorfer enters the game as UNO's leading scorer at 21.5 points per game. Frauendorfer also leads the team in rebounding at 8.5 per game. She recorded career highs in both points (24) and rebounds (12) in Friday's win over Western State. Jamie Nash is nearly averaging a double-double at 18.0 points per game and 9.0 assists per game. Senior Heather Pohl is chipping in 9.5 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game.
Upper Iowa will be playing its first game of the season on Tuesday night. The Peacocks went 2-1 in three exhibition games after going 1-25 last season under then-first-year head coach Carol Russell.
The Coaches
Chance Lindley is in his first year as the Mavericks' head coach. The 35-year-old Lindley comes to UNO from Arizona, where he was an assistant for three years. Lindley's first collegiate head coaching gig came at Barton County Community College, where he went 34-4 in 2007-08 before moving on to Arizona. Lindley graduated cum laude from Wichita State in 2000 with a degree in physical education.
Carol Russell is in her second year as the head coach at Upper Iowa. Russell is 1-25 at the school and 164-104 in her career. Trammell graduated from Nebraska in 1993. She is assisted by Adam Esses.
Scouting the Upper Iowa Peacocks
Upper Iowa returns just one starter from last year's team, which struggled to a 1-25 record. The Peacocks went 1-21 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and finished last. Upper Iowa returns five letterwinners overall in Head Coach Carol Russell's second season at the helm. Senior guard Jeri Jacobson is the top returning player, averaging 8.6 points per game last year.

UNO owns a 2-0 all-time record against Upper Iowa. The last meeting was on Jan. 21, 2006 in Omaha, which UNO won 82-52. The Mavs are 1-0 against the Peacocks at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
What to Watch
As the only senior and the Mavs' leading returning scorer and rebounder, Heather Pohl will look to end her Maverick career in style in 2011-12. The returning All-MIAA honorable-mention selection finished her junior year by avaraging 17.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, both team highs. Pohl also shot a team-best 84.3 percent from the free throw line and 35.2 percent from the 3-point range.

Pohl and junior guard Jamie Nash are climbing the charts in UNO women's basketball history. Pohl ranks seventh in school history in career 3-point field goals made with 113 entering the season. With 56 treys this year, Pohl would move into second place in school history. She hit 62 last season, which ranks third for single-season 3-pointers made at UNO. Meanwhile, Nash's 120 assists last season tied for ninth-best in a single season, and her 81 steals in 2009-10 are also tied for ninth in school history. Nash's 161 steals in her first two seasons at UNO rank just outside the top 10 in school history. Entering the 2011-12 season, Nash is on pace for 322 career steals. The school record is 331, set by Kriss Edwards from 1977-81.
Challenging Schedule Awaits Mavs
UNO will play at last year's SEC runner-up Kentucky and will host two games against Division I opponents in the 2011-12 season. In all, the Mavs will play 27 games in their first season as a Division I transitional school, including 12 at the Sapp Fieldhouse. UNO will play 12 games against Division I opponents, including three against Summit League schools - Western Illinois (twice) and UMKC.
Mavericks Reclassify to Division I
Nebraska Omaha announced in March 2011 its plan to reclassify from NCAA Division II to Division I, beginning with the 2011-12 school year. UNO, which was previously a member of the MIAA, accepted an invitation to join The Summit League and will compete as a full-fledged member with a regular-season conference schedule in 2012-13.
Next Up for the Mavericks
UNO has one week to prepare for one of its stiffest challenges of the season, as the Mavs will hit the road to face No. 18 Kentucky on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 3 p.m. The Wildcats finished second in the SEC last year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round.
