The UNO Maverick women's basketball team begins a Thanksgiving-week road trip with a tough matchup at No. 14 Kentucky on Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 3 p.m. at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, Ky. The Mavs (2-1) have had a week off since a 70-57 win vs. Upper Iowa on Nov. 15 at Sapp Fieldhouse. The Wildcats (4-0) will pose a tough challenge for the Mavs. Kentucky finished second in the SEC last year and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. This year, Kentucky is averaging 91.2 points per game and is ranked 14th in the AP poll and 13th in the ESPN/USA Today poll.
After Wednesday's game, the Mavericks will continue their road trip with two games in West Virginia. On Saturday, UNO will play at Division II West Virginia State in Institute, W. Va. That game tips off at 1 p.m. (CT) at Fleming Hall. The Yellow Jackets are 1-1 on the year. The Mavs wrap up the trip with a Sunday game at Marshall at 12 p.m. in Huntington, W. Va. The Thundering Herd (1-2) will be the second of 12 Division I opponents the Mavs face in their first transitional year to Division I.
Maverick Roundup
1) The Mavericks' 70-57 win over Upper Iowa on Tuesday was their sixth straight home opener win since 2006-07.
2) Paige Frauendorfer is off to the best start of any Maverick, averaging 19.3 points on 56.8-percent shooting from the field. The junior guard has led the Mavericks in scoring and rebounding twice in the first three games and has already set new career highs in both points (24) and rebounds (12). Last year, Frauendorfer averaged 9.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
3) After four double-doubles last year, point guard Jamie Nash is off to a good start with one already this season and is nearly averaging a double-double. Nash is putting up 16.3 points and 8.3 assists per game, to go along with her 6.3 steals and 5.7 rebounds per game.
4) Nash has 19 steals through three games, giving her 180 for her career. She needs just 17 more to break into the top 10 in school history in career steals.
5) Heather Pohl has nailed five 3-pointers to begin her senior season. She now has 118 career 3-pointers, just one shy of sixth place in school history.
6) Despite her 5-10 stature, Rese Huddlin was one of the top JUCO rebounders in the nation last year, and she has produced as expected for the Mavs so far. Huddlin had five rebounds in the season opener, then six in her second game and a career-high eight against Upper Iowa after her earning her first start. Huddlin gave UNO five extra possessions with five offensive boards against the Peacocks. Her 6.3 average is second-best on the team.
7) True freshman Cathleen Cox has seen her playing time increase each game because of her performance. After scoring four points in 12 minutes in the season opener, Cox played 15 minutes the next day and scored seven points. Against Upper Iowa on Tuesday, Cox was second off the bench and played 21 minutes and had a career-high 10 points on 5-of-9 from the field.
Last Time Out
The UNO women's basketball team made new head coach Chance Lindley's home debut a successful one, taking care of business in a 70-57 win over Upper Iowa before 527 fans at Sapp Fieldhouse on Tuesday, Nov. 15.
UNO, which improved to 2-1 on the season, used an 18-8 spurt to close the first half and take control of what was a 20-20 game. Despite the Peacocks (0-1) hitting eight of their first 18 3-point attempts (44.4 percent), the Mavs held a comfortable lead throughout the second half, thanks to a balanced scoring attack with four players in double-figures and a dominating 36-8 advantage in the paint.
Paige Frauendorfer led the Mavericks with 15 points and nine rebounds. Jamie Nash and Heather Pohl each had 13 points, and freshman Cathleen Cox had a career-high 10 points. Rese Huddlin was just shy of double-figures with nine points. Huddlin also had eight rebounds. Nash nearly had her second double-double of the season, finishing with nine steals and also seven assists in addition to her 13 points.
The Coaches
Chance Lindley is in his first year as the Mavericks' head coach. The 35-year-old Lindley comes to UNO from Arizona, where he was an assistant for three years. Lindley's first collegiate head coaching gig came at Barton County Community College, where he went 34-4 in 2007-08 before moving on to Arizona. Lindley graduated cum laude from Wichita State in 2000 with a degree in physical education.
Matthew Mitchell is in his fifth year as the head coach at Kentucky. Mitchell is 90-49 at the school and 120-78 in his career. Mitchell graduated from Mississippi State in 1995.
Renee Bostic is in her fourth year as the head coach of West Virginia State. Bostic is 43-45 at the school and 93-92 in her career. Bostic graduated from Holy Cross in 1996.
Royce Chadwick is in his 11th year as the head coach at Marshall. Chadwick is 146-157 at the school and is 398-268 in his career. Chadwick graduated from Southwest Oklahoma State in 1980.
Scouting the Opponents
Kentucky is 4-0 with an average win margin of 40.5 points. The Wildcats are coming off an 88-71 win over Southern Miss on Saturday. Kentucky will be playing the fifth of 10 straight home games to open the season. Kentucky is led by All-SEC guard A'dia Mathies, who averages 18.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Kastine Evans is averaging 13.0 points per game, and three other Wildcats average just more than 10 points per game.
West Virginia State was 1-1 entering Tuesday night's game vs. Ohio Valley. The Yellow Jackets lost to Concord 77-66 before defeating Shepherd 75-72 to begin the season. Janelle Williams averages 14.5 points off the bench to lead the Jackets. Asia Greenleaf is averaging a double-double at 11.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game.
Marshall was 1-2 entering Wednesday's game at Morehead State. The Thundering Herd opened the season with a 93-50 win over Kent State, but since have lost to Miami (OH) and Ohio. Jasmine Shaw and Shynisha Johnson each average 10.0 points off the bench to lead Marshall.

UNO will be playing its first-ever game against all three opponents this week.
Record Seekers
Senior forward Heather Pohl and junior guard Jamie Nash are climbing the charts in UNO women's basketball history. Pohl enters the season ranked seventh in school history in career 3-point field goals made with 113. With 56 treys this year, Pohl would move into second place in school history. She hit 62 last season, which ranks third for single-season 3-pointers made at UNO. Meanwhile, Nash's 120 assists last season tied for ninth-best in a single season, and her 81 steals in 2009-10 are also tied for ninth in school history. Nash's 161 steals in her first two seasons at UNO rank just outside the top 10 in school history. Entering the 2011-12 season, Nash is on pace for 322 career steals. The school record is 331, set by Kriss Edwards from 1977-81.
Mavericks Reclassify to Division I
Nebraska Omaha announced in March 2011 its plan to reclassify from NCAA Division II to Division I, beginning with the 2011-12 school year. UNO, which was previously a member of the MIAA, accepted an invitation to join The Summit League and will compete as a full-fledged member with a regular-season conference schedule in 2012-13.

After the weekend, UNO returns home for four home games in a span of 10 days. The Mavericks begin the home stretch with a 7 p.m. game against York at Sapp Fieldhouse on Thursday, Dec. 1.
