The UNO Maverick women's basketball team begins a four-game homestand with a 7 p.m. game on Thursday, Dec. 1, against York at the Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavs are 3-3 overall and have played just one home game in their first six games. That will change beginning Thursday, though, as UNO hosts four games within a span of 10 days. The Panthers, a member of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference in NAIA, are 3-7 entering Thursday's matchup.
Series History
This will be the seventh straight year that York has visited UNO at the Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks are 6-0 in the all-time series with an average margin of victory of 35.2 points. Last year, UNO defeated the Panthers 76-46 in the Mavs' season opener. Jamie Nash had 17 points in the victory. Mayara Santos had 13 points for York.
Last Time Out
The UNO women's basketball team rallied from a double-digit second-half deficit to take the lead at Marshall, but in the end, the Thundering Herd were too much for the Mavericks, outlasting UNO 54-48 Sunday afternoon at the Cam Henderson Center. UNO was playing just its second game this year against a Division I opponent. Marshall (3-2), a Conference USA member, held off the feisty Mavericks down the stretch to drop UNO to 3-3 on the year in a game in which the lead changed hands 13 times.
The Mavericks trailed by 11 early in the second half, 32-21, but got back into the game with a 16-4 run spanning 7:06 to take a 37-36 lead. With the game tied at 41-41 with 7:21 remaining, Rese Huddlin sank a free throw to notch a one-point lead for the Mavs, 42-41. However, Marshall scored the next eight points to take a 49-42 lead with 5:10 to play. UNO whittled the lead back down to three at 51-48 on two Jamie Nash free throws with 1:11 left. After Marshall missed a jumper on its next possession, Nash was fouled but couldn't connect on the free throws with 42 seconds remaining.
Marshall then grabbed two offensive rebounds on its following possession. Leandra King was fouled with 13 seconds left and drained two free throws to extend the lead to 53-48. Nash's 3-pointer with seven seconds left missed, and Marshall knocked down one more late free throw to claim the win. Heather Pohl led UNO with 11 points. Paige Frauendorfer had 10 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
The Coaches
Chance Lindley is in his first year as the Mavericks' head coach. The 35-year-old Lindley comes to UNO from Arizona, where he was an assistant for three years. Lindley's first collegiate head coaching gig came at Barton County Community College, where he went 34-4 in 2007-08 before moving on to Arizona. Lindley graduated cum laude from Wichita State in 2000 with a degree in physical education.
Jen Spickelmier is in her fifth year as the head coach of the York Panthers. Spickelmier has a 34-94 overall record at the school. She graduated from York College in 2005.
Maverick Roundup
1) Paige Frauendorfer is off to the best start of any Maverick, averaging 15.3 points on 53.2-percent shooting from the field. The junior guard has led the Mavericks in scoring in four of the first six games and has already set new career highs in both points (24) and rebounds (12). Frauendorfer has scored in double-figures in all six games and is coming off her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds at Marshall on Sunday.
2) Heather Pohl was 3-for-8 from 3-point range on Sunday against Marshall, giving her 123 career 3-pointers, which ranks her sixth in school history. Pohl needs just seven more to move into sole possession of fifth place.
3) Jamie Nash had seven steals in the loss at Marshall on Sunday, and she now has 192 career steals. With five more, she will break into the top 10 in career steals at UNO. Nash is averaging 5.2 steals per game, which ranks third in the nation.
4) Stacia Gebers had her first-career double-double - 12 points and 10 rebounds - in Saturday's 68-59 win at West Virginia State. Gebers also converted an old-fashioned three-point play for the go-ahead points with 2:29 left.
5) 6-4 freshman Taijhe Kelly has made her presence known in the paint in limited playing time so far in her young career. Kelly has nine blocked shots on the year for an average of 1.8 per game in 10.6 minutes per game. Her 1.8 mark ranks sixth in school history for a season blocked shots per game average.
Scouting the Opponents
York has lost four of its last five games. The Panthers, an NAIA member, are led by Mayara Santos, who averages 11.0 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game, all team highs. Sara Lincoln averages 8.8 points per game and attempts 5.9 3-pointers per game. Alyssa Becker is scoring 8.7 points per game on a team-best 54.4 percent from the field.
Scanning the Stats
Because of its reclassification period, Nebraska Omaha cannot be included in the official NCAA statistics. However, with 5.2 steals per game, Jamie Nash ranks third in Division I in that category. William & Mary's Katherine DeHenzel leads the nation with 5.5 steals per game, while Shenise Johnson (Miami, Fla.) is second at 5.3 steals per game.
Clamping Down on 'D'
The Chance Lindley era is only six games in, but already the Mavericks are showing improvements on last year's final defensive numbers. The Mavericks are allowing opponents 62.3 points per game, which is nine points better than last year's 71.3. UNO is also holding opponents to 27.1 percent from long distance. That's a significant upgrade from last year, when UNO's opponents shot 35.8 percent from 3-point range and the Mavs finished last in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
Winning Numbers
60 has been the magic number so far for the Mavericks. When holding opponents under 60 points, the Mavericks are 3-1. When scoring more than 60 points, the Mavericks are also 3-1. The only exceptions: Sunday's loss at Marshall (48-54) and the Nov. 12 loss at Metro State (61-64). UNO has fallen in all three games that its trailed with five minutes to play. But when the Mavs are tied or winning with five minutes left, they are 3-0.
Record Seekers
Senior forward Heather Pohl and junior guard Jamie Nash are climbing the charts in UNO women's basketball history. Pohl entered the season ranked seventh in school history in career 3-point field goals made with 113. With 56 treys this year, Pohl would move into second place in school history. She hit 62 last season, which ranks third for single-season 3-pointers made at UNO. Meanwhile, Nash's 120 assists last season tied for ninth-best in a single season, and her 81 steals in 2009-10 are also tied for ninth in school history. Nash's 161 steals in her first two seasons at UNO rank just outside the top 10 in school history. Entering the 2011-12 season, Nash was on pace for 322 career steals. The school record is 331, set by Kriss Edwards from 1977-81.
Challenging Schedule Awaits Mavs
UNO will play at last year's SEC runner-up Kentucky and will host two games against Division I opponents in the 2011-12 season. In all, the Mavs will play 27 games in their first season as a Division I transitional school, including 12 at the Sapp Fieldhouse. UNO will play 12 games against Division I opponents, including three against Summit League schools - Western Illinois (twice) and UMKC.
Mavericks Reclassify to Division I
Nebraska Omaha announced in March 2011 its plan to reclassify from NCAA Division II to Division I, beginning with the 2011-12 school year. UNO, which was previously a member of the MIAA, accepted an invitation to join The Summit League and will compete as a full-fledged member with a regular-season conference schedule in 2012-13.
