UNO, Summit League Enjoy Success in 2011-12

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO men's basketball team and its future conference have both enjoyed inclusion among various national statistical rankings in the 2011-12 season, speaking to the fit of Nebraska Omaha in The Summit League as the Mavericks begin their first year of reclassifying to Division I. UNO will join The Summit League with a full conference schedule beginning in 2012-13.
In the latest ESPN national statistics release through Dec. 13, the Mavs rank 11th nationally in assists per game (18.2) among Division I schools. UNO is also second in the country in total assists (200), behind only UNLV.
Individually, sophomore guard Caleb Steffensmeier leads the nation with a 5.25 assist-to-turnover ratio. In addition, Nebraska Omaha is 59th overall in team scoring, helped by three players averaging in double figures – Mitch Albers (19.4 points per game), John Karhoff (12.5 ppg) and Alex Welhouse (10.5 ppg). Albers is 35th among Division I scorers this season.
Likewise, The Summit League has had significant men's basketball success in 2011-12 as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. The conference reached an all-time high at No. 12 (through games of Dec. 12) in both the Sagarin and RPI (Collegiate Basketball News) ratings, the third-best ranking among traditional “mid-majors.” The Summit League has three teams among the top 100 in each.
Summit League squads also own a winning percentage of .500 or better against 13 of the 15 mid-major conference its teams have played this season. Member schools own a .509 winning percentage against Division I non-conference opponents this season and a .579 winning percentage in all non-league games.
In addition, The Summit League has four players among the NCAA's top 25 in scoring average and five in the top 28, more than any other conference. IUPUI's Alex Young is the NCAA's active career scoring leader, and his 43 points against Western Kentucky is the nation's highest single-game total this season.
Nebraska Omaha returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 15, hosting Saint Mary (Kan.) in a 7 p.m. tipoff at Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavs host their next future Summit League foe, Western Illinois, on Jan. 24 in Omaha.
