OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska Omaha hockey team will attempt to set a school record for the third straight season when it hosts its annual “Sell Out” game on Friday, Jan. 13 at the CenturyLink Center. The goal of this year's “Sell Out Duluth” promotion, sponsored by Metro Credit Union, is to earn the first-ever sellout of all 15,959 seats for a UNO hockey game when the Mavericks play Minnesota Duluth.
“This is an event our players, coaches and staff look forward to each year because of the excitement it brings to the game,” said Trev Alberts, UNO's Director of Athletics. “In addition, Minnesota Duluth is the defending national champion and is currently ranked number one in the country so the stakes are even higher in this important WCHA series.”
Because the game will be carried nationwide on the NBC Sports Network, currently known as Versus, the start time for the game has been moved up to 6:37 p.m. CT. That also will be the start time when UNO hosts Denver on March 2, a game that the NBC Sports Network also will carry.
In addition, the rematch between UNO and Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, Jan. 14 will be carried live statewide on NET-1 and NET HD.
The Mavericks have launched a special web site, SellOutDuluth.com, to help fans purchase tickets and keep track of the tickets remaining for the game.
UNO launched the “Sell Out” promotion in 2010, drawing a then school-record 13,417 fans on a snowy night for a 5-5 tie with Ohio State. Last year, the Mavericks eclipsed that mark by nearly 2,000 fans when 15,137 showed up to see the Mavericks beat Wisconsin, 4-1. That same weekend, UNO drew a total of 25,248 fans, another school record for largest attendance for a weekend series.
The CenturyLink Center Omaha is the second-largest venue for college hockey in the country behind only Ohio State's Value City Arena at 17,500.
The Mavericks are off until Dec. 30 and 31 when they host Quinnipiac of ECAC Hockey. Friday's game begins at 7:37 p.m., and Saturday's game features a special 2:07 p.m. faceoff.
