The UNO Maverick women's basketball team returns from Christmas break to face Conference USA member Tulsa on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 6 p.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Wednesday's game will mark UNO's third straight against a Division I opponent. The Mavs are coming off a 65-58 win at Summit League foe Western Illinois last Tuesday. Tulsa is 3-6 on the season and is coming off a 60-43 loss at TCU last Tuesday.
Series History
Wednesday's game will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Last Time Out
The UNO women's basketball team earned its first win over a fellow Division I opponent, coming from behind to knock off Summt League foe Western Illinois on the road, 65-58, on Tuesday, Dec. 20.
The Mavericks (8-4) fought back from a four-point halftime deficit to topple their future conference opponent and record their first win over a Division I school this year in four tries. Jamie Nash led four Mavericks in double figures with 17 points off the bench. Paige Frauendorfer had 13, Stacia Gebers had 12 - six in the final two minutes - and Cathleen Cox added 10.
With the score tied 53-53, Frauendorfer converted a huge three-point play to give UNO a 56-53 edge with 2:24 left in the game. The Leathernecks (3-7) then drew within one, 56-55, on a putback by Brittany Demery with 2:10 left. The Mavs failed to score on their next possession, but Western Illinois' Sadie Webb missed a shot down low, and Gebers was fouled on the rebound. Gebers sank both free throws for a 58-55 lead with 1:40 left. After another free throw by Frauendorfer, Western Illinois cut the lead to 59-58 on a Valencia Kelly 3-pointer with 54 seconds remaining.
With the next possession critical for the Mavs, Gebers came up huge. She grabbed a missed 3-pointer by Cox and laid it in with 25 seconds left to push the lead back to three, 61-58. Gebers then grabbed the board on the next Leatherneck miss, and knocked down two more free throws to make it 63-58 with 12 seconds left to all but ice the game. A Nash steal as the Leathernecks tried to inbound the ball put the exclamation point on the win, as Nash knocked down both free throws for the final margin.
Nash scored her 17 points on 5-of-7 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Gebers went 8-for-8 from the line, and the Mavs as a team shot 76.9 percent (20-of-26) from the charity stripe.
The Coaches
Chance Lindley is in his first year as the Mavericks' head coach. The 35-year-old Lindley comes to UNO from Arizona, where he was an assistant for three years. Lindley's first collegiate head coaching gig came at Barton County Community College, where he went 34-4 in 2007-08 before moving on to Arizona. Lindley graduated cum laude from Wichita State in 2000 with a degree in physical education.
Matilda Mossman is in her first year as the head coach at Tulsa. Mossman is 3-6 at the school and is 153-101 in her 10th year as a head coach. Mossman graduated from Western Kentucky in 1979.
Scouting the Opponents
Under new head coach Matilda Mossman, Tulsa is 3-6 overall. The Golden Hurricane knocked off one Summit League team earlier this season, Oral Roberts on Nov. 29, 65-57. Tulsa is 3-1 at home this season. Taleya Mayberry leads the team at 17.0 points per game. Taylor Hooker averages 11.3 points per game, while Tiffani Couisnard is a threat down low, scoring 7.8 points per game and grabbing 9.1 rebounds per game.
Maverick Roundup
1) Paige Frauendorfer is off to the best start of any Maverick, averaging 15.2 points on 49.3-percent shooting from the field. The junior guard leads the Mavericks with five double-doubles and has already set new career highs in both points (24) and rebounds (15) this season. Frauendorfer has scored in double-figures in 11 of 12 games.
2) Jamie Nash has 218 career steals, which ranks her seventh in school history. She needs just five more to take sole possession of fifth place and 25 to break into the top three. Nash is averaging 4.8 steals per game, which ranks second in the nation.
3) Heather Pohl has made 137 career 3-pointers, which ranks her fifth in school history. The senior needs just six more to move into sole possession of fourth place. Pohl is averaging 12.0 points and 10.3 rebounds over her last three games.
4) Freshman Cathleen Cox started her first-career game at Loyola Chicago on Dec. 18. Cox played 30 minutes, recording six points and four assists.
5) Amanda Woodring hit a school-record eight 3-pointers and scored a career-high 24 points against College of St. Mary on Dec. 7.
6) An incredible four Mavericks recorded double-doubles in the 72-70 overtime win over Northwest Missouri State on Dec. 10. Jamie Nash had a game-high 21 points and 11 assists; Paige Frauendorfer had 18 points and 14 rebounds; Heather Pohl had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Rese Huddlin had 11 points and 13 rebounds, with eight coming on the offensive end.
Paint Producing Results
The Mavericks are 8-0 this year when winning the battle in the paint and are 0-4 when not outscoring their opponents in the lane. During a four-game winning streak in early December, the Mavericks dominated play in the paint, posting a combined 156-46 advantage for an average of 39.0-10.6 per game.
Scanning the National Stats
Because of its reclassification period, Nebraska Omaha cannot be included in the official NCAA statistics during its first year in Division I. However, with 4.8 steals per game, Jamie Nash would rank second in Division I in that category. Quinnipiac's Felicia Barron leads the nation with 6.2 steals per game. The Mavs as a team average 13.0 steals per game, which would rank 22nd in the country.
Clamping Down on 'D'
The Chance Lindley era is still young, but already the Mavericks are showing improvements on last year's final defensive numbers. The Mavericks are allowing opponents 58.7 points per game, which is nearly 13 points better than last year's 71.3 average. UNO is also holding opponents to 26.4 percent from long distance. That's a significant upgrade from last year, when UNO's opponents shot 35.8 percent from 3-point range and the Mavs finished last in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

Sixty has been the magic number so far for the Mavericks. When holding opponents under 60 points, the Mavericks are 7-1. And when scoring more than 60 points, the Mavericks are 8-1. The only exceptions: a 54-48 loss at Marshall on Nov. 27, and a Nov. 12 loss at Metro State, 64-61. UNO has fallen in all four games that its trailed with five minutes to play. But UNO has played well with a lead this season. The Mavericks are 6-0 when leading at halftime and are 8-0 when tied or leading with five minutes left in regulation.

Senior forward Heather Pohl and junior guard Jamie Nash are climbing the charts in UNO women's basketball history. Pohl ranks fifth in school history with 137 career 3-point field goals. She needs just six more to move into sole possession of fourth place and 18 to move into the top three. Pohl also moved into the top 10 in school history for career offensive rebounds at Loyola Chicago on Dec. 18. Pohl has 143 career offensive boards to rank eighth all-time.

Nebraska Omaha announced in March 2011 its plan to reclassify from NCAA Division II to Division I, beginning with the 2011-12 school year. UNO, which was previously a member of the MIAA, accepted an invitation to join The Summit League and will compete as a full-fledged member with a regular-season conference schedule in 2012-13.
