SEATTLE, Wash. – The UNO men's basketball team opened the Elgin Baylor Classic on Thursday night, falling 91-72 to host Seattle in front of a crowd of 2,302 at KeyArena. With the loss, the Mavericks are 6-9 on the season, while the Redhawks improve to 3-8.
Nebraska Omaha had three scorers finish in double figures – senior guard Mitch Albers (25), sophomore center John Karhoff (14) and sophomore guard Isiah Gandy (11). Gandy's mark was a career high.
Sophomore forward Matt Hagerbaumer led the way on the boards, pulling down a team-leading seven rebounds, while Karhoff and junior forward Alex Welhouse chipped in five apiece.
Seattle also had a trio of scorers with double-figure efforts – Aaron Broussard (31), Eric Wallace (19) and Clarence Trent (11). Broussard's performance also included a double-double with a game-best 11 rebounds.
As a team, UNO outshot Seattle 44.3 percent to 43.9 percent, but the Redhawks committed 12 turnovers while forcing 20 for the Mavs.
In the first half, the Mavericks faced a deficit of just three points at 43-40 with under five minutes to go. The Redhawks then stretched it out to a 58-48 lead by halftime, and a 12-3 run to open the second stanza maintained the double-digit margin. With the help of 14 second-half points from Broussard, Seattle went on to take the 91-72 win in its home arena.
Albers, who has 1,535 points in four years, now sits just 21 points away from tying former Maverick Michael Jenkins for third in school history for career scoring (1,556 points).
Nebraska Omaha returns to action on Friday, Dec. 30, facing Coppin State. Tipoff is set for 8:15 p.m. (CT) at KeyArena in Seattle, Wash.
