The UNO Maverick women's basketball continues its four-game homestand with a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, Dec. 7, as College of St. Mary travels down the road to renew a longtime series. The Mavs are 5-3 overall after Saturday's 63-47 win over NAIA Division II No. 2 Briar Cliff. The Flames, a member of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference in NAIA, are 10-3 entering Wednesday's matchup and are ranked No. 21 in NAIA Division II.
Series History
The Mavs and Flames will be meeting for the first time since 2004. UNO leads the all-time series 24-1 and won the last matchup, 60-57, on Dec. 7, 2004 at the Sapp Fieldhouse. College of St. Mary's lone win over the Mavericks came in 1975.
Last Time Out
Stacia Gebers had a career-high 18 points, and the UNO Mavericks rolled past Briar Cliff 63-47 Saturday afternoon at the Sapp Fieldhouse. The win was the second straight for the Mavericks (5-3) against NAIA competition. NAIA Division II No. 2 Briar Cliff (9-2, 4-0 GPAC) came into the game averaging 82.6 points per game, but was held to just 30.5-percent shooting by the stifling Maverick defense.
On the offensive end, Gebers led the way with 18 points on 9-of-10 from the field, setting the school record for best field goal percentage in a game with a minimum of eight makes (.900). Gebers also added eight rebounds on the day. Paige Frauendorfer had her third straight double-double and fourth this season, collecting 18 points and 12 rebounds. She also had a team-high six steals.
The Mavericks led by as many as 19 in the first half at 37-18 with 2:53 left. But the Chargers closed the gap with an 8-2 run to end the half at 39-26, in part due to their increased full-court pressure. The Chargers continued to press the Mavericks throughout the second half, and it caused UNO fits at times, but also resulted in some easy baskets after breaking the pressure. UNO's lead never slipped under 13 points after the break and ballooned to as many as 20 at 61-41 with 3:20 to play. For the second straight game, UNO dominated the paint, this time with a 34-14 advantage. UNO forced 27 turnovers, but also turned it over 26 times. However, UNO still finished with a 26-10 advantage in points off turnovers. Heather Pohl added nine points for the Mavericks, while Rese Huddlin had six.
The Coaches
Chance Lindley is in his first year as the Mavericks' head coach. The 35-year-old Lindley comes to UNO from Arizona, where he was an assistant for three years. Lindley's first collegiate head coaching gig came at Barton County Community College, where he went 34-4 in 2007-08 before moving on to Arizona. Lindley graduated cum laude from Wichita State in 2000 with a degree in physical education.
Chuck Brewer is in his fourth year as the head coach at College of St. Mary. Brewster has a 40-62 record at the school and a 116-95 overall record in eight years as a head coach. Brewer graduated from Mount Marty.
Scouting the Opponents
College of St. Mary is 10-3 on the season but has lost two of its last three. Theresa Elworth leads the Flames in scoring with 14.0 points per game. Forward Olivia Grigg averages 12.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, while also shooting 44.4 percent from 3-point range.
Maverick Roundup
1) Paige Frauendorfer is off to the best start of any Maverick, averaging 15.9 points on 57.6-percent shooting from the field. The junior guard has led the Mavericks in scoring in six of the first eight games and has already set new career highs in both points (24) and rebounds (12). Frauendorfer has scored in double-figures in all eight games and is coming off her fourth double-double of the season and third straight with 18 points and 12 rebounds against Briar Cliff on Saturday.
2) Heather Pohl was 3-for-9 from 3-point range on Saturday, giving her 128 career 3-pointers, which ranks her sixth in school history. Pohl needs just two more to move into sole possession of fifth place.
3) Jamie Nash had four steals in the win over Briar Cliff, and she now has 203 career steals, which ranks her eighth in school history. Nash will move into sole possession of seventh place with two more steals and needs just 20 more to break into the top five. Nash is averaging 5.3 steals per game, which ranks second in the nation.
4) Sophomore Stacia Gebers led the way in the win over Briar Cliff on Saturday with a career-high 18 points on 9-of-10 from the field. Gebers' performance set the school record for best field goal percentage (.900) in a game with a minimum of eight makes.
5) Taijhe Kelly and Rese Huddlin had career games against York last Thursday. Kelly had career highs of 12 points and eight rebounds, while Huddlin had career highs of 12 points and nine rebounds. The two combined for 11 offensive rebounds.
Owning the Paint
The Mavericks have dominated the paint in their last two home wins. Last Thursday, UNO owned a 62-10 advantage in the paint against York, and on Saturday, the Mavs outscored Briar Cliff 34-14 for a combined 96-24 advantage on the week. The Mavs are 5-0 when winning the battle in the paint.
Scanning the Stats
Because of its reclassification period, Nebraska Omaha cannot be included in the official NCAA statistics. However, with 5.3 steals per game, Jamie Nash would rank second in Division I in that category. Quinnipiac's Felicia Barron leads the nation with 6.1 steals per game.
Clamping Down on 'D'
The Chance Lindley era is only eight games in, but already the Mavericks are showing improvements on last year's final defensive numbers. The Mavericks are allowing opponents 57.2 points per game, which is nearly 14 points better than last year's 71.3 average. UNO is also holding opponents to 26.7 percent from long distance. That's a significant upgrade from last year, when UNO's opponents shot 35.8 percent from 3-point range and the Mavs finished last in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
Winning Numbers
Sixty has been the magic number so far for the Mavericks. When holding opponents under 60 points, the Mavericks are 5-1. When scoring more than 60 points, the Mavericks are also 5-1. The only exceptions: a 54-48 loss at Marshall on Nov. 27, and a Nov. 12 loss at Metro State, 64-61. UNO has fallen in all three games that its trailed with five minutes to play. But when the Mavs are tied or winning with five minutes left, they are 5-0.
Record Seekers
Senior forward Heather Pohl and junior guard Jamie Nash are climbing the charts in UNO women's basketball history. Pohl entered the season ranked seventh in school history in career 3-point field goals made with 113. With 56 treys this year, Pohl would move into second place in school history. She hit 62 last season, which ranks third for single-season 3-pointers made at UNO. Meanwhile, Nash's 120 assists last season tied for ninth-best in a single season, and her 81 steals in 2009-10 are also tied for ninth in school history. Nash's 161 steals in her first two seasons at UNO rank just outside the top 10 in school history. Entering the 2011-12 season, Nash was on pace for 322 career steals. The school record is 331, set by Kriss Edwards from 1977-81.
Mavericks Reclassify to Division I
Nebraska Omaha announced in March 2011 its plan to reclassify from NCAA Division II to Division I, beginning with the 2011-12 school year. UNO, which was previously a member of the MIAA, accepted an invitation to join The Summit League and will compete as a full-fledged member with a regular-season conference schedule in 2012-13.
Next Up for the Mavericks
UNO finishes its stretch of four home games in 10 days when old MIAA foe Northwest Missouri State visits the Sapp Fieldhouse on Saturday at 1 p.m.
