Colorado Springs, Colo. -- The No. 9 UNO softball team cruised to a pair of 9-1 six-inning wins on Sunday against Colorado at Colorado Springs at Mountain Lion Field, thanks in part to back-to-back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning to break open a close game two.
The Mavericks earned the four-game sweep of the Mountain Lions to start the season 4-0.
In the first game, #Beth Haley# allowed one run in a complete game, while the Mavs put two on the board in the third and fourth innings, then five in the sixth.
#Katelyn Hinton#, #Molly Feichtinger and Lindsey Slocum# had two hits apiece for the Mavericks, while Slocum finished the game with three RBI for the Mavs. #Alli Hukill# recorded the first home run of the season for UNO with a solo blast to center to start the fourth inning.
In game two, freshman #Dana Elsasser# made her first career start in the circle and turned in a gem. Elsasser allowed just two hits and one run while striking out 10 Mountain Lion batters.
#Amber Lutmer# led the attack at the plate with two solo home runs, her second coming in the midst of back-to-back-to-back shots in the fifth inning. With UNO leading 3-1 in the top of the fifth and with two runners on base, Slocum hit a three-run homer to right center, then Lutmer hit her second of the game to put the Mavs up 7-1. Hukill finished off the barrage with a solo homer to right, her second of the day.
UNO will compete in the Southeastern Oklahoma State Tournament next weekend in Durant, Okla. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m. vs. Angelo State.
