Feb 15, 2011 | General, Hockey
MADISON, Wis. - UNO sophomore goaltender #John Faulkner and freshman left wing Johnnie Searfoss# were both named Red Baron WCHA Players of the Week today. Faulkner earned the Defensive Player of the Week award while Searfoss shared the Rookie of the Week nod with St. Cloud State's Nick Jensen.
It's the fourth weekly award for Faulkner this season while it's the first for Searfoss. The Mavericks have now earned eight WCHA Player of the Week awards.
Faulkner continued his sterling season by backstopping both UNO wins last weekend against Wisconsin. On Friday, he stopped 31 of 32 shots in UNO's 4-1 victory. The following night, he allowed three goals, only one of which was even-strength, on 30 shots in a 4-3 victory. For the weekend, he played 119:52, allowing four goals (two on the power play) out of 62 shots. He finished the series with a 2.00 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage. In earning both wins, he now has a career-best 17 victories this season, just four from tying the school record for wins in a season set by Dan Ellis. For all games played, he ranks sixth in the WCHA in GAA (2.43) and save percentage (.913) while playing in a league-high 1700:34 minutes.
Searfoss, playing in place of the injured #Terry Broadhurst#, put together the finest weekend of his young career, posting a goal and two assists to tie for the team lead in scoring during a two-game sweep of visiting Wisconsin last weekend. He factored into both game-winning goals in the series. In the opener, he scored the game-winner to snap a personal 12-game goal-scoring drought in UNO's 4-1 win. The next night, he had two assists including the primary assist on Matt Ambroz's game-winning goal in a 4-3 victory over the Badgers. Searfoss tied for the team lead with a +4 rating on the weekend while also blocking one shot.
The Mavericks return to action on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18 and 19 when they visit Alaska Anchorage. Game time each night is 10:07 p.m. CT.
