Holtmeyer Named to Tino Martinez Award Watch List

Junior right-handed pitcher #Joe Holtmeyer# has been named to the Tino Martinez Award's initial 2011 watch list, it was announced. Holtmeyer is among 91 student-athletes nominated for the award, which is given annually to the most outstanding player in NCAA Division II baseball.
Holtmeyer was the nation's Division II strikeout leader in 2010, when he fanned 152 batters as a sophomore. The Omaha native compiled a 9-2 record and a 2.89 earned run average over a team-leading 87.1 innings of work. Holtmeyer garnered first-team All-America honors before going on to pitch in the prestigious Cape Cod League last summer.
The Tino Martinez Award is named after the former University of Tampa Spartan, Olympian, first-round draft pick and MLB All-Star, Tino Martinez.
Nominations for the award were made by baseball sports information contacts and media members. Omission from the initial list does not exclude additional players from future consideration.
The list will be updated with a mid-season release mid-April. Semi-finalists are scheduled to be announced on May 7th, with the finalists to be named on May 19th.
After the finalists are named, fans will be invited to vote online at TinoAward.com to help determine the winner. The winner will be announced after the conclusion of the Division II Baseball Championship held in Cary, N.C., May 28th to June 4th.
UNO opens its 2011 season on Friday, Feb. 25, facing Augustana in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. in Topeka, Kan.
