UNO's 81-74 Victory at SBU Stretches Win Streak to

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The UNO men's basketball team stretched its win streak to a season-long seven games, taking an 81-74 win at Southwest Baptist on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Mavericks are 17-7 (14-6 MIAA), while SBU drops to 11-15 (8-12 MIAA). Nebraska-Omaha has now won seven consecutive games and seven straight league road contests.
Senior guard Tyler Bullock led the way with 26 points on 12-for-21 shooting, seven rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. Junior guard Mitch Albers also passed the 20-point mark, finishing with 22 points, as well as four boards, two assists and a block. Sophomore forward Alex Welhouse totaled 10 points with a pair of 3-pointers, and senior guard Torrian Harris pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.
Southwest Baptist was topped by Kurt Koenig's 17 points and 15 points from Ryan Dougherty. Stephen Cotton was a challenge at the glass, grabbing 11 boards along with three blocked shots.
The Mavericks shot 50 percent from the field, besting SBU's 42 percent performance, though the Bearcats had a strong night from the charity stripe with 92 percent free throw shooting.
UNO and SBU traded leads in the first half, with Bullock chipping in four baskets in the span of 16:04 to 14:49. After tying it at 15-all, the Mavs took a seven-point lead on a jumper by freshman guard Caleb Steffensmeier before the Bearcats cut it to a two-point margin. A 14-4 run put UNO up 40-28, but the host squad forged a 12-3 run of its own to bring it to 43-40. The Mavericks held on, however, taking a 47-40 advantage by halftime.
Two shots by Albers to open the second stanza made it 49-40, and SBU came roaring back to tie the game at 57-57 with a trio of 3-pointers and two field goals. Another trey by Zach Kliene later matched the score again at 64-64, but back-to-back baskets by Welhouse and Albers put it back in the Mavericks' favor.
Southwest came within three on a pair of free throws by Dougherty to make it 75-72 with 2:32 to go, but a layup and free throw from Bullock, along with three charity shots by Steffensmeier, held off the Bearcats.
UNO grabbed the 81-74 win, extending its win streak and maintaining its hold on third place in the MIAA.
The Mavericks return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 22, traveling to Missouri Southern. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Joplin, Mo.
