Harris' Double-Double Leads Mavs to 93-67 Win

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO men's basketball used a strong first half to capture a 93-67 win over Emporia State at Sapp Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon, taking its third straight league victory. With the win, the Mavericks improve to 13-7 (10-6 MIAA), while ESU drops to 11-11 (8-8 MIAA) on the year.
Senior guard Torrian Harris grabbed his fifth double-double of the year with 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds and also added career-best eight assists and a steal. Harris was one of five Mavericks to finish in double-figure scoring, as he was joined by junior guard Mitch Albers (16), senior guard Jeff Martin (14), sophomore forward Alex Welhouse (11) and redshirt freshman center John Karhoff (14). As a team, UNO shot 51 percent from the field to ESU's 41 percent showing.
Emporia State was led by Michael Tyler, who had 24 points off the bench with a 4-for-4 showing from behind the arc. Xavier Burnette added 13 points, and Adam Holthaus contributed 12.
Karhoff got the Mavericks on the board first with four straight inside buckets to go up 8-4. Starks then subbed in at center for Karhoff and added a dunk of his own, and Welhouse had a tip-in to make it 12-8, all on the Mavs' inside effort. Martin stretched the lead to 19-12 on a 3-pointer, but ESU's Michael Tyler kept it close with 19 points off the bench over a span of six minutes.
With the score at 32-29, Nebraska-Omaha surged out to an 11-point lead with a fastbreak layup by Welhouse. Albers then sunk a trio of 3-pointers, making it 51-32 by halftime. As a team, UNO shot 54 percent from the field as a team, topping the Hornets' 39 percent effort.
Welhouse kicked off the second half with a jumper and a 3-pointer to make it 56-32. UNO took it out to a 25-point advantage on a tip-in by Harris, who drew a foul from Holthaus and hit the subsequent free throw.
Martin dropped in another triple with 10 minutes go to, maintaining the 25-point lead before Harris chipped in a crowd-pleasing dunk that put UNO up by 27. The Mavs never dipped below a 20-point lead, going up by as much as 28 on a layup by sophomore Josh Lunch with 1:46 left. ESU's Burnette chipped in a pair of free throws in the final minutes, finishing the game off at 93-67.
UNO returns to action on Wednesday Feb. 9, hosting Missouri Western. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse.
