Mavericks Picked Third in MIAA Preseason Baseball

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The UNO baseball team was picked to finish third by the league's coaches in the 2011 MIAA preseason poll, the conference office announced Monday.
The Mavericks, who went 32-20 (28-12 MIAA), last year, earned 100 points for No. 3 in the conference. The 12 MIAA coaches selected Central Missouri as their preseason favorite with 121 points and voted Emporia State at No. 2 with 111 points.
Missouri Southern was selected No. 4 with 80 points, and Fort Hays State followed in fifth place with 79. Missouri Western was voted sixth with 74 points, followed by Northwest Missouri State in seventh (61), Washburn in eighth (60), Pittsburg State in ninth (43), Southwest Baptist in 10th (28), Truman in 11th (21) and Lincoln in 12th (14).
UNO will play its third year as a member of the MIAA in 2011, and junior All-America pitcher Joe Holtmeyer, the NCAA Division II strikeout leader in 2010, leads the returners from last year's squad. Head coach Bob Herold begins his 11th year at the helm of the Maverick program with a career record of 373-224-2.
Nebraska-Omaha opens the season on Friday, Feb. 25, facing Augustana in a doubleheader at 5 p.m. in Topeka, Kan.
