Blais Named WCHA Coach of the Year

MADISON, Wis. - UNO head coach #Dean Blais# was named WCHA Coach of the Year, it was announced today by the league office. It's the fourth time he's earned the award, the first as head coach of the Mavericks.
It's the second time a UNO hockey coach has been named the conference coach of the year. Mike Kemp won the same award in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association in 2005.
Blais led the Mavericks to a conference record of 17-9-2 this season and a third-place finish, the highest conference finish and the greatest number of league wins in school history. The Mavs currently have a record of 21-13-2 overall, tying the second-best win total in school history.
Blais earned his 300th career win on Feb. 12 when the Mavericks beat Wisconsin, 4-3. Now in his 12th season as a head coach, he has a career record of 303-144-41 (.663). He has previously been honored as the WCHA Coach of the Year in 1996-97, 1998-99 and 2000-01 as the head coach at North Dakota.
The league also announced its other year-end awards today. North Dakota's Matt Frattin was named the WCHA Player of the Year and the league scoring champion. Justin Schultz of Wisconsin was named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Year, and Denver's Jason Zucker was named the WCHA Rookie of the Year. North Dakota's Chay Genoway was named the WCHA Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year.
The Mavericks had one player named to the All-WCHA team. Goaltender #John Faulkner# was named the goalie on the third team. So far this season, he's posted a career-best record of 20-12-2, just one win from tying the school record for wins in a season. He leads the nation with six shutouts.

The 12th-ranked Mavericks begin the WCHA playoffs on Friday when they host a best-of-three first-round series against Bemidji State at Qwest Center Omaha. Friday's game begins at 7:37 p.m. while Saturday's game, and Sunday's if necessary, begin at 7:07 p.m. Tickets for all three games are on sale at the Qwest Center box office, the Sapp Fieldhouse box office and on-line at OmahasTeam.com.
