ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – #Nkeiruka Domike# set an NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championship record in the triple jump to help the UNO track team to a fifth-place finish on Saturday night.
The Mavericks finished with 29 points, just three behind New Haven which finished fourth. The Mavs were fourth in the indoor championship last year.
Grand Valley State won the championship with 83 points, outdistancing MIAA member and defending champion Lincoln which had 51 points. Host Adams State was third with 37 points.
Lincoln, UNO and Central Missouri all finished in the top six.
Domike successfully defended her national championship from 2010 and in the process, set the meet record on her second jump of the day with a mark of 43-11 ¾. She finished more than two feet longer than runner up Amanda Ouedraogo of Abilene Christian. She also bettered the previous meet record by more than five inches.
Domike also took second in the long jump on Friday, scoring 18 points for UNO in the championship.
In other action, #Heather Minssen# finished fifth in the shot put with a mark of 48-3 ½.
Defending 800 meter champion #Anja Puc#, who was battling injuries, finished eighth in a time of 2:14.50.
Freshman #Kathie-Lee Laidley# took fifth place in the high jump with a leap of 5-8 ½. #Maja Mihalinec# was seventh in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.42.
The 4 x 400 meter relay team Mihalinec, Puc, #Celeste Robinson and Kayla Koepke# did not score, finishing tenth with a time 3:52.50.
All athletes finishing in the top eight receive All-American status.
