Haley, Slocum Sweep MIAA Player of the Week Awards

UNO pitcher #Beth Haley# and outfielder/pitcher #Lindsey Slocum# were named the MIAA Pitcher and Hitter of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced on Friday.
The awards mark the first weekly honors for the Maverick seniors this year. Haley, the returning MIAA Pitcher of the Year, earned the pitching honor for the fourth time in her career. Slocum, a returning All-American, was named MIAA Hitter of the Week for the third time in her career. The duo sparked the 23rd-ranked Mavericks to a 4-0 record in doubleheaders last weekend against Northeastern State and Missouri-St. Louis in Emporia, Kan.
Haley pitched 11 shutout innings with a 0.00 ERA, 12 strikeouts and zero walks. The Highland, Ind., native recorded a 2-0 record, as the Mavs outscored opponents in her two games pitched, 17-0. In Friday's 8-0 win over Northeastern State, Haley pitched all five innings played, allowing three hits while striking out five. In Saturday's 9-0 defeat of Missouri-St. Louis, Haley pitched a complete game of six innings, allowing just two hits while striking out seven. For the weekend, opponents hit just .132 against her. Haley has gone the distance in all seven starts this year. The returning MIAA pitcher of the year has a 1.20 ERA this season with a 44-to-9 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Haley has pitched a team-high 52.1 innings this year and has yet to allow a home run.
Slocum hit .455 with two home runs, two doubles, six RBI and five runs scored in helping the Mavericks to a perfect 4-0 weekend. Slocum went 5-for-11 combined at the plate. In Friday's second game against Northeastern State, Slocum broke open a close game with a two-run homer in the sixth inning to give UNO a 3-0 lead, which they went on to extend to 4-0. In a 9-0 rout of Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday, Slocum hit an RBI single in the third inning to make it 2-0 and then added a two-run homer in the fourth inning for a 5-0 lead. Slocum had at least one hit in all four games. A returning first-team All-American, Slocum also picked up the complete-game win in the circle in a 6-2 win over Missouri-St. Louis.
The Mavericks open play today at the MIAA Crossover North. UNO takes on Central Missouri at 2 p.m., and Southwest Baptist at 4 p.m.
