Patton Shearer Resigns as Women's Basketball Head

OMAHA, Neb. - UNO women's basketball Head Coach Patty Patton Shearer announced her resignation on Wednesday after seven seasons at the helm at UNO, effective immediately.
“I am incredibly appreciative for the opportunity to coach here at UNO. The individuals who are here make this place uniquely special,” Patton Shearer said. “However, at this time, as difficult a decision as this is, I am making a change that is in the best interest of the program and our family. I have the utmost gratitude to the chancellor and the administration for their support over the years.”
The second winningest coach in school history, Patton Shearer recorded a 102-94 (.520) record in her seven seasons at UNO. In the previous seven years before Patton Shearer took over, UNO was a combined 72-119 (.377).
“We deeply appreciate Patty's leadership of the basketball program over the past seven years,” said Josh White, UNO's Associate Athletic Director for External Operations. “Patty took the program to a new level and deserves much of the credit. I know that Patty cares deeply about each one of her student-athletes, as well as the UNO program, and her commitment to the program was evident each and every day. We respect Patty's decision to make a change in her professional career at this time and know she will be successful no matter what she chooses to do.”
Patton Shearer took over the reins at UNO in 2004, as the Mavs were coming off the worst season in school history at 5-22 and four straight losing seasons. She experienced success immediately, leading the Mavs to a 14-14 record in her first season and a 20-11 record in 2005-06, the most wins UNO had achieved in 14 years.
Under Patton Shearer, the Mavericks made the transition from the North Central Conference to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2008-09. In her first year in the MIAA, Patton Shearer helped the Mavs make their mark, leading them to an 11-9 record in conference play and a 15-12 record overall. The 11-9 record marked the first winning conference season for UNO since a 12-6 record in the NCC in 1991-92. In the last two seasons, UNO was a combined 20-33, but with only one senior on the squad in 2010-11.
This season, Patton Shearer celebrated her 100th win at UNO with an 87-83 upset of No. 6 Washburn on Jan. 22. Only Cherri Mankenberg (1976-98) has won more games at UNO (344) in the 40 years of the program's existence. Patton Shearer's career record stands at 162-143 (.531).
While she searches for her next endeavor, Patton Shearer has volunteered to assist in any way in the search for the next head coach.
“Patty has been a great ambassador for our program and we appreciate her offer to assist the athletic department in finding a successor capable of continuing the growth of the Maverick program,” White said. “She will be missed not just by her student-athletes, but by the entire UNO family.”
