
Mavericks Earn NCAA Bid; Draw Michigan in St. Loui

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO hockey team earned the second NCAA tournament berth in school history on Sunday. The Mavs will be the third seed in the West Regional of the 2011 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey championship and face Michigan in the opening round on Friday, March 25 at 4:30 p.m. CT at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo.
The Mavericks have posted a record of 21-15-2 this season. They finished 17-9-2 in the WCHA, good for third place before being eliminated in the first round of the WCHA playoffs by Bemidji State on March 12.
The Wolverines are 26-10-4 overall and won the CCHA regular season championship with a record of 20-7-1. They finished third in the CCHA playoffs.
The two teams already have played each other twice this season. UNO beat Michigan, 4-2, on Oct. 22 before the Wolverines rebounded for a 6-1 win the following night to close the two-game series at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Mavericks other trip to the NCAA playoffs came in 2006 when they earned an at-large bid and played Boston University in the first round. BU won 9-2 on March 24 at Worcester, Mass.
Boston College (30-7-1) will be the top seed in the West Regional and will face Colorado College (22-18-3) in the other first round game at 8 p.m. CT. The two winners will face off on Saturday, March 26 at 8 p.m. CT.
The UNO/Michigan game will be carried live on-line at ESPN3.com. Radio coverage will be available on the voice of Omaha's Team, KVNO 90.7 FM and at KVNO.org. Dave Ahlers and Terry Leahy will have the call beginning with the First National Bank Pre-Game Show at 4 p.m.
