TOPEKA, Kan. – The UNO baseball team stretched its win streak to six games on Sunday afternoon, topping Lincoln 4-0 in the first half of a doubleheader at Jerry Robinson Field. With the victory, the Mavericks improve to 13-4 (10-3 MIAA), while Lincoln drops to 6-8 (5-8 MIAA).
The second game of Sunday's conference doubleheader was suspended due to snowy weather conditions in Topeka. The contest was stopped in the top of the third inning, with the score tied at 2-2 with two outs and one LU runner on second.
In the first game, sophomore Connor McCrite led the way with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with one RBI and a run scored. Junior Brady Hohl got the Mavs on the board with his second home run of the year, while senior Tyler Davies had an RBI and a run scored of his own.
Junior Joe Holtmeyer (3-1) captured the win on the mound, surrendering just four hits over six scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts. Lincoln starter Joe Jungmeyer (1-2) took the loss, going 5.1 innings and giving up three runs on seven hits with just one walk.
Both teams were quiet until the bottom of the third inning, when Hohl sent a leadoff home run over the left field wall and put UNO up 1-0.
The Mavericks tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth, started off with a leadoff walk by junior Martin Sartin. Freshman Beau Suponchick came in as a pinch runner for Sartin, advancing on a groundout and a wild pitch. McCrite then doubled down the right field line to score Suponchick and later crossed the plate himself on a Davies single to center. Davies followed with two stolen bases and came in on a Lincoln error, giving UNO the 4-0 lead it needed for the win.
The Mavericks return to action on Monday, March 28, facing Lincoln in the final day of the four-game conference series at Jerry Robinson Field. UNO's suspended game will resume at 9:30 a.m., followed by a doubleheader with two seven-inning games.
