EMPORIA, Kan. – The UNO baseball team completed its weather-delayed, four-game conference series with Lincoln on Monday at Glennen Field, as the Mavericks finished a suspended game from Sunday and also played a doubleheader with two seven-inning contests. The Mavs successfully swept their second straight league opponent and extended their win streak to nine games, improving to 16-4 (13-3 MIAA) on the year.
UNO 3, LINCOLN 2
Nebraska-Omaha and Lincoln resumed Sunday's game in the top of the third inning with a tied score of 2-2 and one runner on second. Matt Tew (1-0) took the place of Sunday starter Ben Brown, striking out the only remaining batter in the inning. Tew went on to earn his first win of the season, throwing 5.1 innings of relief and giving up just two hits with six strikeouts. Lincoln's Taylor Klugman was credited with the loss, going eight innings and surrendering three runs on six hits with six strikeouts.
UNO held the Blue Tigers off the board for the rest of the game, and the Mavericks went ahead in the bottom of the fourth. Connor McCrite drew a walk and advanced to third on Colby McCord's single through the right side, then scored when Tyler Davies was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. It was the only run Nebraska-Omaha would need, finishing with a 3-2 victory.
UNO 10, LINCOLN 3
The Mavericks opened with a huge offensive push in the first inning of the next game, sending 12 batters up and scoring seven runs on six hits while capitalizing on two LU errors. Hohl led off and reached on an error, and Tyler Splichal and Jed Hanson put up back-to-back bunt singles to load the bases. McCord then reached on a fielder's choice, and Hohl scored to go up 1-0. Caleb Palensky chipped in a single to right field to plate Splichal, and Palensky and McCord both came in on Tyler Davies' two-RBI hit up the middle.
Leading 4-0, the Mavs scored again when Hohl singled to center field and brought in Davies and Trevor Gappa. Splichal singled again with a hit to left, and Suponchick crossed the plate to give UNO its last run of the inning at 7-0.
A three-run fifth inning from UNO kept the Mavs well out in front. Palensky walked and advanced two bases on an error and a passed ball, then scored to make it 8-2. Beau Suponchick immediately singled to center to plate Waldron, later scoring himself when Hohl sent a double to the left field corner that put the Mavs ahead at 10-2.
Lincoln got on the board with one run in both the third and fourth innings, as well as another in the sixth, but it was not enough, with the final score at 10-3.
Derek Landis (3-0) garnered the win with five innings of work, giving up five hits and two runs while striking out four. Chris Pfau (2-2) was credited with the loss after 10 Maverick hits over 4.2 innings on the hill.
Hohl, Splichal, Palensky and Suponchick each tallied two hits apiece, while Palensky and Suponchick both scored two runs apiece. Hohl added three RBI, while Davies had two of his own.
UNO 5, LINCOLN 1
In the series finale, Mark Waldron led the way at the plate, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while McCrite chipped in two runs of his own.
Starter Cory Buckley (2-2) earned the win, going four scoreless innings and giving up just two hits with three strikeouts. Lincoln's Stephen Schnieders (1-1) took the loss, throwing three innings and giving up five hits, three runs – two earned – and three walks with two strikeouts.
UNO started strong again, scoring a run apiece in the first, second and third innings. In the first frame, Splichal walked and scored on Martin Sartin's RBI single to center, putting the Mavs up 1-0. The second inning saw Palensky tally a leadoff single to center and score on Hohl's bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0. Nebraska-Omaha then plated another run in the third, as McCrite singled through the left side and came across on Waldron's single to right, extending the lead to 3-0.
The Mavericks stretched their advantage to 5-0 in the fifth, as McCrite led off with a walk and stole second base. Waldron then sent a triple to deep right center, scoring McCrite. Waldron also came in on a passed ball, giving UNO a solid cushion heading into the money innings.
Facing a shutout, Lincoln finally sounded an answer in the seventh, when Kyle Henke scored on Adam Rush's groundout, giving the two squads a final score of 5-1.
UNO returns to action April 1-3, traveling to Emporia State for a four-game MIAA series with the Hornets. First pitch for Friday's game is set for 6 p.m. in Emporia, Kan.
