Mavs Drop Two at 2011 Best Western Premier Spring

DENTON, Texas - The No. 9 UNO softball team dropped its first two games of the 2011 Best Western Premier Spring Fling on Friday, falling to St. Mary's (Texas), 4-0, and to Texas Woman's University, 6-5, at Pioneer Field.
In the second game of the day, the Mavs fell down 4-0 in the first inning to Texas Woman's on a three-run homer by Katie Hines off of #Lindsey Slocum#. But the Mavs got two runs back when Slocum singled home #Ashley Lynch and Alli Hukill# in the bottom of the first.
The Pioneers added a run in the top of the third to make it 5-2, but UNO responded with a three-run third inning to tie the game. Lynch led it off with a triple to right center, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Hukill. After Slocum walked, #Amber Lutmer# hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season to make it 5-5.
Texas Woman's loaded the bases in the top of the fifth, forcing #Beth Haley# to come in to pitch for UNO. The Pioneers notched a run on a Hines groundout to the pitcher to take a 6-5 lead, then Haley struck out Kaylyn Vranich to end the inning.
The Mavs came to bat in the bottom of the seventh still trailing by one, but Lynch led off with a single, then advanced to second on a sac bunt by #Lauren Larson#. Hukill then drew a walk, then the Maverick runners each moved up a base on a passed ball. Slocum was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out, but Lutmer grounded into a 5-3 double play to end the game.
Earlier in the day, UNO was blanked by St. Mary's (Texas), 4-0. St. Mary's (13-10), was coming off an 8-0 win over undefeated No. 1 Angelo State on Wednesday.
#Dana Elsasser# had a rough go early, allowing a walk and two singles to the first three batters of the game for one earned run. Haley came on with one down in the first to pitch the rest of the game. Haley gave up five hits and two earned runs while striking out five.
#Emma Wright# had two hits for the Mavericks, while #Katelyn Hinton# and Larson each doubled. UNO didn't get its first hit until the bottom of the fifth inning. The Rattlers were up 4-0 by that point.
The Mavs finish up the tournament with an 11:30 a.m. game on Saturday against Texas A&M International and a 4 p.m. contest against Cameron.
