Mavericks Take Doubleheader Sweep of Missouri Sout

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Missouri Southern on Saturday, defeating the Lions 9-5 and 9-7 at the Ballpark at Boys Town. With the pair of wins, the Mavericks improve to 22-11 (18-10 MIAA), while MSSU drops to 16-20 (12-18 MIAA).
Nebraska Omaha combined for 18 runs on 25 hits for the day, including six extra-base knocks. Junior Brady Hohl and sophomore Tyler Splichal each registered four hits apiece in the doubleheader, and senior Jed Hanson delivered his team-leading sixth home run of the year.
GAME 1 – UNO 9, MISSOURI SOUTHERN 5
Junior Joe Holtmeyer (5-2) had a strong winning effort on the mound in game one, surrendering three runs on six hits over six innings of work. Holtmeyer, who leads the MIAA in strikeouts, fanned eight batters for a season total of 62 Ks. MSSU's Ryan Wheat (2-2) took the loss, giving up three runs – two earned – on four hits. Wheat also allowed four walks with a pair of strikeouts.
As a team, the Mavericks smashed nine runs on 11 hits, while Missouri Southern finished with five runs on nine hits. UNO committed no errors but capitalized on the Lions' four miscues.
Nebraska Omaha went up 1-0 in the first inning, with Hanson reaching on fielding error and advancing to second on the throw. Junior Mark Waldron then singled through the right side to plate Hanson and give the Mavs the early lead.
Missouri Southern tied it up in the fifth, as Tee Helsel led off with a walk and moved over with CJ Matthews' sacrifice bunt. Dane Kolkmeyer sent a single to right, scoring Helsel and making it 1-1.
The knotted score didn't last long, as the Mavericks exploded for six runs on five hits in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Caleb Palensky started off with a walk, and Hanson reached on a fielder's choice, with Palensky advancing to second on a throwing error. Waldron's sacrifice bunt down the third base line moved both runners up one base, followed by junior Martin Sartin's two-RBI single through the right side to go ahead at 3-1.
Junior Colby McCord and Splichal had back-to-back singles, with Splichal's hit allowing Sartin to come in. Senior Tyler Davies then doubled down the left field line to clear the bases and extend the lead to 6-1. Davies added another run of his own when he scored on Hohl's single to left, finishing the inning at 7-1.
In the sixth, UNO chipped in two more runs, starting with Hanson's homer down the right field line. Waldron then drew a walk and advanced to second on a balk, later scoring from third on McCord's RBI groundout. With a 9-1 margin heading into the seventh, MSSU came back for four runs on five hits, but it was not enough to overcome the Mavericks, who took the 9-5 victory.
Davies finished with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate while also chipping in two RBI and a run scored. Sartin and Splichal both had multiple-hit efforts with two hits apiece, and Sartin added two RBI. Hanson also scored three times to lead the Mavericks.
GAME 2 – UNO 9, MISSOURI SOUTHERN 7
UNO struck early for four runs in the bottom of the first, with Hohl leading off with a bunt single. Palensky belted a triple to right to score Hohl, and Hanson's subsequent single through the left side plated Palensky. Waldron was then hit by a pitch, and he and Hanson both came around on Splichal's two-RBI single to right center, pushing the Mavericks' advantage to 4-0.
The Lions cut it to a one-run ballgame in the top of the second, scoring three runs on three hits. Patrick Deao led off with a double down the right field line, later coming in on Helsel's RBI single to left. Fernando Lugo then drew a base, advancing to second on Cullen Baxter's fielder's choice that plated Helsel. Kolkmeyer also reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Lugo to come across and bringing the score to 4-3.
Missouri Southern added a pair of runs in the third to take a 5-4 lead, sparked by back-to-back singles by Dallas Burke and Deao. Helsel then drew a walk to load the bases with no outs, and Burke scored on Lugo's RBI groundout. Deao also came around when Matthews reached on a fielder's choice, affording MSSU its first lead of the day.
Nebraska Omaha came roaring back in the fifth, scoring five runs on five hits. Hohl led off with a bunt single, moved to second on Palensky's sacrifice bunt and scored on two consecutive wild pitches to tie the game at 5-5. Hanson added a walk, and Waldron singled through the left side to put Hanson on third, after which he scored on junior Trevor Gappa's RBI bunt single. Waldron was plated on Splichal's double to left field, and Gappa added another run with McCord's sacrifice fly to right. Sartin then chipped an RBI single to right field that plated Splichal, pushing the Mavs' advantage to 9-5.
Southern mustered one more run in the seventh and another in the ninth, bringing it to 9-7. With two outs and the bases loaded, senior Tom Schmidt struck out the final batter, earning his first save of the season and helping the Mavs to the doubleheader sweep.
Senior Ben Brown (4-1) earned the win for UNO, giving up six runs on 11 hits over seven innings of work. Brown walked just one batter and struck out three. Missouri Southern's Michael Mudd (2-3) was credited with the loss, surrendering nine runs on 11 hits with two walks and a strikeout.
Hohl and Palensky finished with three hits apiece in the nightcap, and Hohl contributed a pair of runs scored. Splichal drove in three runs, while Hanson and Waldron each scored twice. Missouri Southern's Helsel finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, and the Lions had 12 hits in the second game but also stranded 12 runners on base.
UNO returns to action on Sunday, April 17, hosting Missouri Southern for the series finale. The doubleheader is set to begin at Noon at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
