Holtmeyer Becomes UNO Career Strikeout Leader in 5

EMPORIA, Kan. – The UNO baseball team split its series at No. 1 Emporia State on Saturday afternoon, defeating the nationally-ranked Hornets 5-2 in the first game before falling 8-6 in the nightcap at Glennen Field. The Mavericks are now 18-5 (15-4 MIAA), while ESU is 21-3 (17-2) on the year.
GAME 1 – UNO 5, EMPORIA STATE 2
Junior right-handed pitcher Joe Holtmeyer (4-1) starred in the first game, striking out a season-high 12 batters to become UNO's all-time career strikeout leader. Holtmeyer now has 279 in just two and a half seasons, which passes former Maverick Tim Huber (2005-08), who amassed 277 in his four-year career.
Holtmeyer tossed a complete-game, seven-inning effort against ESU, allowing two runs on six hits while walking two. Emporia's Drew Smith (3-1) took the loss with two innings of work, giving up three runs on three hits with four walks.
Junior Brady Hohl led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. As a team, the Mavericks had just one strikeout for the game, which came against Smith.
UNO got on the board in the top of the third inning, when freshman Beau Suponchick and junior Brady Hohl smashed back-to-back home runs to lead off the offensive effort. Sophomore Tyler Splichal then singled, advanced to second on a balk and moved to third when senior Jed Hanson and junior Martin Sartin drew consecutive walks. Splichal scored the third run of the frame on a groundout, putting the Mavs up 3-0.
Emporia State plated a run in the fifth inning, but UNO came right back for two runs in the top of the sixth. Junior Colby McCord led off with a walk and scored on sophomore Connor McCrite's triple to right center. McCrite later came in on freshman Caleb Palensky's sacrifice fly to center, extending the lead to 5-1.
ESU managed one run on three hits in the bottom of the sixth, capped by David Albritton's RBI double that scored Kevin Wempe. The Mavs cut off the rally, however, as McCrite threw home to catch Andy Cotton attempting to score and finished the game with a 5-2 final score.
GAME 2 – EMPORIA STATE 8, UNO 6
In the second game, Nebraska Omaha looked poised to take another win, enjoying a 5-3 lead into the top of the fifth inning. But the Hornets roared back offensively, earning the 8-6 victory to snap UNO's 11-game win streak.
ESU's Brett Kinsel (3-0) earned the win with three innings of work, giving up four runs on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Sophomore Derek Landis (3-1) took the loss, throwing four innings and surrendering eight runs – seven earned – off eight hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Micha Cotter grabbed his eighth save of the year for Emporia State, finishing the last two innings of the night with a pair of strikeouts.
Offensively, Jed Hanson, Sartin and McCrite each tallied two hits apiece, and McCrite scored twice. Hanson finished with two RBI and sent out his team-leading fifth home run of the year.
Hohl led off the game with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He then scored on a groundout, putting the Mavs ahead at 1-0. In the second, McCrite doubled down the right field line and was plated on an RBI single through the right side from Palensky, extending the advantage to 2-0.
ESU knotted the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the second, then went ahead 3-2 in the third when Cotton singled up the middle and later came in on Dillon Hazlett's RBI single to left.
The Mavericks regained the lead in the fourth, when Colby McCord led off with a home run. McCrite then doubled to center and scored on senior Tyler Davies' sacrifice fly to make it 4-3. UNO added another run in the fifth with a roundtripper by Hanson, pushing it to 5-3.
Emporia State brought in five runs on four hits in the bottom of the frame, retaking control of the game at 8-5. UNO scored one more time in the top of the seventh, as Suponchick led off with a double and notched a run on Sartin's single through the right side, but it was not enough to overtake the 8-6 final score.
UNO returns to action on Sunday, April 3 at Emporia State. First pitch for the series finale is set for Noon at Glennen Field.
