Minssen Sets Shot Put Record at Northwest Open

MARYVILLE, Mo. - #Heather Minssen# set a new school record in the shot put to lead the UNO track and field team to a sixth-place finish at the Northwest Open hosted by Northwest Missouri State. The Mavericks scored a majority of their points in the field events in their first meet of the outdoor season.
Truman State won the event with a team score of 145.5 points. Host Northwest was second at 144, and William Jewell College was third at 88. The Mavericks had 63.75 points.
Minssen won the shot put with a throw of 49-5, a foot and a half farther than the old school record set by Theresa Williams in 1997. Minssen's winning toss was more than six feet farther than teammate #Lianne McNaughton# who finished second with a throw of 43-0 1/2.
Minssen also took second in the discus with a throw of 147-0, beating her personal best by more than 14 feet. Teammate Elizabeth Thompson also scored, finishing seventh with a throw of 119-6.
Also in the throwing events, #Madison Haugland# finished second in the hammer throw with a toss of 156-9.
In the triple jump, #Jessica Ripp# finished third with a leap of 35-8 3/4. #Sami Spenner# finished in a four-way tie for second in the high jump with a mark of 5-2 1/4.
On the track, #Jody-Ann Coore# won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.28, edging out Sara Shippy of William Jewell by six one-hundreths of a second.
In the 3,000 meter steeple chase, #Nicole Behm# finished third in a time of 12:53.76.
The Mavericks return to action on April 9 at the Emporia State Relays.
