Mavericks Move on to Semis with 5-2 Win Over Empor

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The UNO men's tennis team cruised past Emporia State, 5-2, in the opening match of the MIAA Conference Tournament on Thursday at Plaza Tennis Center.
The Mavericks, now 9-8 on the year, advanced to face No. 1 seed Northwest Missouri State on Friday at 11 a.m. The Bearcats are 17-4 and are ranked No. 18 in the nation.
Drew Mercier got the Mavs off on the right foot at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Nick Stiefer. Matt Frost defeated Andrew Shipp, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, at No. 2 singles. Anthony Forcucci beat Andrew Konetzni, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Emporia State's only singles win came at No. 5, where Nathan Wehrman beat Brandon Otoski, 7-5, 6-2.
Two matches didn't finish because the Mavs wrapped up the win with five wins in the first seven matches that ended. Eric McKnight was locked in a 4-6, 6-2, 2-3 battle with Mitch Kibbe at No. 3 singles, while Andrew Lescelius won the first set over Matt Van Horn, 7-6 (7-1), but was trailing 1-5 in the second set.
In doubles play, Mercier and Frost beat Stiefer and Konetzni, 8-3, and McKnight and Forcucci beat Shipp and Wehrman, 8-5, for two Maverick doubles points. The Hornets grabbed the No. 3 doubles point when Kibbe and Van Horn beat Lescelius and Decature Banker, 8-3.
UNO will now look to upset the 18th-ranked Bearcats, who went 4-0 in MIAA play this season and are ranked third in the region.
