MAVERICKS BEGIN TOUGH STRETCH WITH TWO GAMES AT WASHBURN
The 11th-ranked and MIAA-leading UNO softball team will look to lock up its first ever outright MIAA regular season title in the next week, but to do so, the Mavs must go on the road at Washburn on Wednesday, then return home to face the second and third-place teams in the standings, Emporia State and Missouri Western, on Friday and Saturday before making up a postponed series with Truman sometime early next week.
UNO (36-6, 13-1) holds a slight lead in the standings, thanks to Emporia State's loss to Missouri Southern over the weekend that dropped the Hornets to 14-2 in MIAA play. The Mavs and Lady Blues will be making up a series that was rained out on March 26. UNO, winners of 18 of its last 19, owns an 11-5 all-time record against Washburn and has won four straight. Washburn is 15-24 overall and 6-9 in MIAA play entering Tuesday's doubleheader with Central Missouri.
COMING DOWN THE HOME STRETCH
The Mavericks have just four remaining series this season: three this week and one at Truman that the make-up date has not yet been set for. The Mavs return to conference action this Wednesday when they head to Topeka, Kan., for a make-up doubleheader with Washburn at 2 p.m. The Mavs close out the regular season with home conference series against Emporia State on Friday, April 29 and Missouri Western on Saturday, April 30. The Missouri Western series is Senior Day and Alumni Day at Claussen-Westgate Field.
AWARD-WINNING MAVS
The Mavs have been well represented this season in the weekly MIAA Player of the Week awards. Beth Haley, the reigning MIAA Pitcher of the Year, has been named MIAA Pitcher of the Week three times this year. Four Mavs have been named MIAA Hitter of the Week - Lindsey Slocum, Katelyn Hinton, Amber Lutmer and Molly Feichtinger.
HALEY ON FIRE
Beth Haley is 16-2 in the circle with a 0.89 ERA for the Mavericks in her senior season. The Highland, Ind., native has pitched 17 complete games in 18 starts and has recorded nine shutouts. Haley pitched 40 straight innings without allowing an earned run in a six-game span from March 23 through April 5. The Mavs have won the last 14 games that Haley has started.
SLOCUM CHASING THE RECORD
Lindsey Slocum's 147 career RBIs entering this week rank third all-time in school history. Slocum needs just seven RBIs to move into second place and just 12 to set the school record for career RBIs, currently held by Holly Voss at 158 (1994-97).
